DOR vs POF

Does anyone know if there is a difference btwn decreased ovarian reserve and premature ovarian failure or are they the same thing?

I am trying to figure that our myself and I think there is. My RE diagnosed me with POF but I've been doing a lot of research and it seems that women with POF have to have a reading of high FSH on more then 2 occassions (this I have) and an abscense of menses for 6 months or more (this I don't have - just short cycles). I think that there are other factors too, E2 at CD3 being low and low progesteron. I did have low E2 (>20) at CD3 and I'm not sure about my progesteron. I found a great website with a lot of good information from leading POF doctors and women with POF. Check it out The International Premature Ovarian Failure Association - hopefully you'll be able to get some answers. I'm going to question my RE about it further when I go in again - I think I have DOR based on my research. Keep me posted on what you find out.

My old RE didn't actually say one or the other, he just said my ovaries were "putzing out." I kind of gave myself the dx of POF based on what he said, but so far I've only had 1 high reading (which was 36 and rather high) and until now I have always had my periods- just short like you said. I just started reading the Infertility Cure and I'm going to look more into acupunture and traditional chinese methods. Thanks for finding the website, I'll check it out.

From what I have read, POF usually needs at least 2 FSH >40 and very little or no antral follicles. I think most women are no longer even having AF. Maybe all of us are DOR and not POF?

I'm with Deanna on the research that I've found so I'm planning to question my RE about the diagnosis. I've had consistently high FHS but my highest reading was 24.3 and my most recent antral follicle count was poor (2 on the left and none on the right). Maybe my antral follicle count was why he gave me the diagnosis of POF. I wish I had the answers. I'm glad that I've found you all!

I'm hoping to get more answers when I have my next consult to go over my day 3 b/w (hopefully in about 2 weeks). Thanks ladies for your input. I'm glad we're not alone in this.

I took it for 10 days and Wednesday was the last day, so I'm expecting AF in about a week and a half. I had some spotting around mid January and I thought AF was coming, but she never did. This has never happended to me before and I don't know if it's coming off the follistim or if it has to do with the high FSH.
