I would say that it is slightly more uncomfortable than a regular GYN exam with a spectulum etc...

Good luck

I've not heard of that test - are you perhaps talking about the HSG? Hystosalpinogram or something like that - the one where they inject dye into your uterus to see if your fallopean tubes are clogged?

If it's the HSG, the answer is "not ususally, but it depends". Personally for me it was almost exactly the same as an annual exam with pap smear. Took some Tylenol beforehand, had someone waiting to drive me home just in case, and didn't need any of it.

If it's the HPG that I've not heard about, I hope someone else can answer you!

I was all worried when they gave me pain medication to take beforehand - I took it as directed and didn't have a problem. They did end up giving me novacaine and then I really didn't feel a thing - so that felt a little weird. Overall it was a piece of cake - except for the male doctor walking into the room to the worst view ever....he was VERY professional but I was very embarassed for a few seconds....

I took 4 Aleve (220 mg each) about an a hour before the procedure. It was uncomfortable and I am also a giant baby about pain. I used a stress ball to help clutch onto something. It also helped to take real long, deep breaths. Good luck to you!

I had two HSGs. You want to know if it hurts? The answer is YES! It was also painful for three of my friends who had the procedure. If your Dr will give you meds - take them.
Good Luck!

They prescribed a higher dosage motrin and I took one pill an hour before as directed - they also he prescribed an antibiotic (I think) just to make sure I didn't get an infection - both were prescribed before I had the procedure. I didn't take any pain meds after - they had told me I might feel a little cramping like menstrual cramps and I did but very minor.

I think it depends on who is doing it

I had in HSG done in January and it really didin't hurt at all. I took no pain meds (I wasn't even told to). It kinda felt like a regular Gyn exam. I have heard people who say it was extremely painful, so I have come to the conclusion that it depends on who is doing the test (just like with any test with any dr)!~!~!

HSG

I had an HSG about 15 months ago. I was told to take four advil an hour before the procedure. Luckily my RE did the procedure at his facility (not a radiologist in a hospital, which seems to be pretty common). The only point at which I felt pain was when the dye was forced through a partially blocked tube. Afterwards I had what felt like the equivalent of menstrual cramps. I was also given an antibiotic to take following the procedure.

I had heard so many bad things about it beforehand, that I was petrified about it. Maybe all of the hype helped lessen the pain for me... Overall, I'd say it's really not that bad. I could have probably driven myself home.

Good luck.

I didn't take anything and it didn't hurt one bit!! I have horrible cramps though, so I have a pretty high pain tolerance! Seriously, I didn't think it hurt at all.

It hurt like heck!!!!!! And I'm no baby about pain. I must say, tho, that what someone said about the pain depending on who is doing the procedure, I'd have to agree. The same NP who did my HSG also did one of my IUIs, and both were VERY uncomfortable. She has a great bedside manner but a rough hand.

It's just one of the things you need to go through in overcoming infertility. I had that procedure done (everything checked out just fine) and I also had the laparascopic procedure to check for and clean out endometriosis. The lap is done under general anesthetic which was fine. But they use gas to inflate your abdomen so that they can see what they need to see. One of the side effects of this gas (CO2, I think) is that as it is working its way out of your body after the procedure, it can cause intense neck, shoulder and upper back pain. And it was intense, like having the worst sore muscles. But I was just off my feet for a day or two and then back to work good as new.

There is, unfortunately, a lot of discomfort associated with infertility treatments. And you lose whatever modesty you started with. After a while, you'll be inviting passersby into the examining room to have a look.

We did not conceive with the year of treatments we did (six cycles with breaks in between) and we are considering taking one last stab at TTC before moving ahead with our third adoption. I'm not willing to give up my dream of being pregnant just yet, and I accept the discomfort and pain of the treatments. Even if we don't conceive, at least I'll know we gave it a good try.

Don't fret about the pain. It might hurt and you might be uncomfortable, but it's FAR less painful than labor and delivery. You're going through a little bit of pain now so you can have the pleasure of A LOT of pain later. Hopefully the end result is a baby in your arms and it will all have been worth it.

Best of luck to you!

My sister and I both had the test by the same Dr. I had no pain what so ever. I went on a shopping spree after. My sister on the other hand, Said it was very uncomfortable and all ahe wanted to do was go home and sleep. I guess it depends on the person.

I took the 4 motrins and was fine, but I've been told I have a high threshold for pain. My doctor complimented me on how 'good' I did, like I had anything to do with it! I say ask for pain medication ahead of time. . . it can't hurt, right?
