Hello everybody. I've got spotting a couple of days ago and thought I was pregnant. Then, the next day it turned to a period- like bleeding. What really suprised me was my period isn't due until the 15th of May. I took anti-biotics prior to the spotting. Did I have mc? I never had my period earlier than this BTW. My breasts stopped being sore today and I am feeling dizzy.

If someone out there could help me with this. Is it possible that I had a MC in week 2 of being pregnant?

Im no expert but I have never heard of antibiotics causing a mc. Meds like cytocec or methotrexate do but not antibiotics. Did you do anything diff this cycle to throw it off, any diff treatments. Stress can cause irregularities. Im sorry but it doesnt sound to me like a m/c. May have been a chemical pregnancy, where there may have been implantation but never developed, just released hormones. A lot of BFP's if you test eraly enough can end in chemical pg. Im sorry again.

I work in the medical field and have seen mc many times because of antibiotics. I know it sounds bad but that is one of the reasons that antibiotics are not recommended for those who are or are trying to have babies. I hope this helps. Good Luck

MMIddour ~ Just curious what area of medicine you're in. Im a L+D nurse and I have never heard of this. Can you name specific antibiotics please?

I am a Paramedic. I have seen it when I have worked on the L&D floors at various hospitals, now by no means is it common but I have seen, in early pregnancy, penicillin has been the main one and there was one more that the OB doctor that I have worked with said can cause mc in early pregnancy but I can not remember what it is called. It is not very common as you know medication affects everyone different. I hope that this answers your question.

I am not meaning to disagree with you. I just want to have a discussion.

Penicillin is pregnancy category B. The FDA states, "Aminal studies have revealed no harm to the fetus, however there are no adequate or well controlled studies in pregnant women. OR Animal studies have shown an adverse effect, but adequate and well controlled studies in pregnant women have failed to demonstrate a risk to the fetus in any trimester."

So basically aminal studies have shown its safe.... or if animal studies show an adverse effect and then studies on humans have shown its safe.

Tylenol and Prenatal Vitamins are also Pregnancy category B.

I think you are mistaken. Studies show it is safe in any trimester, therefore Penicillin will not cause a miscarrage. I know a lot of women read these forums and I don't want them to be scared of Penicillin, because it is safe to take in any trimester.
