question
I will start bcp in a couple of weeks to prepare for my first (and probably my only) IVF cycle. I'm having some moral issues and I wondered if any of you that have been through IVF can help. I did 6 IUI w/follistim inj and had 3-4 follies each time. Are they going to try to get me to make more than that - ballpark? If so, do they try to fertilize all of them? In your experience, how many are likely to fertilize? My RE will only implant 3, which is fine, but if I end up with extras to freeze and the first time works (and I have more than one), I having trouble with the possibility of having to make the decision to disgard the rest. I just don't think I can do that. DH and I have discussed this and agreed that if we get pg w/one baby and we have some frozen, we'll go ahead after a year or so for another, but what are the chances that all 3 will implant? As much as I would absolutely love to have twins, I don't think my body can handle 3 and selective reduction is out of the question. So, so many questions! Please, if you have any information to offer, or just some words of encouragement, I'd love to hear it.
Longwinded, sorry! And sorry for the run on sentences. |

I did 2 IUIs and then went on to do an IVF. They are going to try to get you to produce as many follicles as possible and they will try to retrieve as many as possible. Then what happens is they fertalize them and see how the progress from there. That will then determine how many you will implant and how many will be frozen. The first one is tough because they aren't completely sure how you are going to respond to the meds. When I went in for mine they had 7 that were of the size they wanted and only 4 were good enough to tranfer so we transfered all of them and unfortunately it did not work for us. It is good to get as many as possible so you can do FET if it does not work, but you are right there are issues about what to do with the remaining ones and it is a mixed thought on that. For us we had decided that if it came to that decision we would donate them for Parkinson research. Some people would chose to donate them to another couple, some would have them destroyed. Most people I know have continued to keep them frozen and try for another child at a later date. As to if all 3 take there wasn't much of a choice for me. I am only 4'11 and small. I tend to have larger babies though as my dd was 8lb 13oz when she was born and large babies run in the family. They would be very concerned for my health as well as the babies if I was pg with more than twins so we knew reduction had to be considered if three or four took. That was a very hard thing to face, but like the RE told me they don't want multipal births either and the odds against it have gotten much better. I wish you the best and I will say a prayer for you too.
