Question about Synthroid dosage with Hypothyroidism

I had my first u/s yesterday and we saw 2 sacs. I asked my RE about my Synthroid dosage now that I am pregnant. He told me to double my dose two times a week. I take 50 mcg Synthroid daily and I'm supposed to take 100 mcg on Tuesdays and Fridays. Due to the shock of the 2 sacs I didn't question anything. I go back next week and I'll ask to get my levels checked, which were under 2.0 while ttc. He said I need 30% more Synthroid now that I am pregnant. Wouldn't it make more sense to increase my daily dose or even do 75mcg every other day?

Has anyone ever heard of only increasing your Synthroid dose two times a week instead of increasing your daily dose?

I would have to say that no matter what way you get the extra 30% it's all going to amount to the same thing. I think the Dr just said to double your dose twice a week because it's easier than having to write another prescription and then have a totally different way of taking it than what you're used to, the only thing different this way, is that you'll have to take two pills every Monday and Friday. Not too bad I don't think....

I know with Synthroid, it takes a long time to get into your system when you first start taking it, and it also takes a long time to get out of your system after you stop taking it. So taking the extra pill every three days will keep your levels just perfect for being pregnant, and the only way of knowing that is to have your dr do more frequent Thyroid blood workups on you. Good luck with this and I wish you well with your twins!!

CONGRATULATIONS!

~Kris~

Elaine, I also am hypothyroid and do request having my thyroid levels checked no less then once per trimester. However, I never needed to increase my dose until the third trimester. Then I was taking 50 mcg every other day and 75 mcg on the in between days. It got a bit confusing but thank goodness for pill boxes! I've never been pregnant with twins though so you might just have to have your levels checked and involve your endocrinologist.
