How did you find out it was thyroid problems?

Is it as simple as just a test of TSH?

The reason I am wondering is it has been 3.5 years of trying and and now 2 m/c early which may be implantation related. And I am wondering if it could be my thyroid among other things.

I have polyps on my thyroid and my TSH always comes back normal. The polyps are too small to be removed.

I am going to speak to my RE about some of these issues, and honestly I had never heard of an RI before these posts, so I am just wondering if anyone else can share some information about their journey of discovery!

Thanks!

hello jess and to you. my dh and i were married thinking i would never conceive and that was before we knew the half of my problems lol. We somehow unknowingly(the entire previous year plus i was completely period free) conceived our first son. We knew it was possible at that point but of course when we tried for number 2 nada. I had driven by the office called fertility center and wanted to go in so many times. one day i did and set up an appt..you could find someone in the phonebook if you don't already have one lined up. they did blood work first thing and asked me if i had ever been diagnosed hypo thyroid..(i hadn't although had been checked for HYPER lol) i was still anovulatory and that my tsh indicated borderline hypo thyroidism so they gave me first cycle of provera to induce af and first clomid 50 mg to do clomid challenge test ..then they scheduled me for HSG..where they check to see if your tubes are blocked. i thought this should be fine(any time i think...bad things happen lol) i showed a left side complete blockage at the end near the ovary..they called it a hydrosalpinx. the 50 mg clomid i did not O..then we had 2 natural cycles..but no O (according to opk) so in may/june i went back in for 100 mg clomid and since the opk's showed no O they were gonna look via u/s so cd 12(i think that is an average?)they did u/s and showed what looked like two round sponges lol..the u/s tech said have you ever been diagnosed pcos..(they keep coming lol) i said no...the re said they would check for pcos later not to worry bout it now cuz i had very few symptoms and that i should come back in 5 days for another u/s..next one showed some growth ..went in for another u/s and i had 1 folly on my good side and a possibly folly on my bad side..we did the ovidrel injection to induce and iui two days later...13 days after my iui i had a positive hpt..a week or so later i lost it..i was devastated..now looking back i think it could have been due to the hydrosalpinx as they say the fluid that is trapped in the closed tube can leak back in the uterus and disrupt implantation...oh yeah they put me on 25 mcg of synthroid for the hypo thyroid issues..i have been taking those since january of this year and my levels are back in the normal range...my re was concerned becuz of the studies linking hypo thyroidism with developtmental delay in babies...the only weird thing with my almost diagnoses (i seem to be half working and half not lol)i show none of the characteristics of pcos or hypothyroidism..i'm a rail generally high energy(except lately) 5'7 120 lb no excessive hair growth ...have had trouble with anemia, brittle nails..etc..any way good luck to you and keep us posted...

Thanks

Thanks Dylansmommy for your reply. I am having my blood work done as we speak to look for thyroid issues among other things. It's sad that we have to wait for a m/c to get the additional testing sometimes. It's sad to want to find something on yoru bloodwork, but an answer would be nice.

I'm really late on this thread, but I want to point out that you can be told that your tsh results are "normal" when in fact they are not okay for ttc.

Some labs will report a tsh of up to 5.5 as "normal" when for ttc it should be below 2.5, and some even say below 2.0.

My tsh was initially 5.7 which my primary care doctor said was "borderline" and that we could just watch it. I was lucky that my first RE said they wanted it below 2.0 and put me on meds, but then they never paid attention to the results so I never got the right dose. I finally saw an endocrinologist who got it to 2.7, and I finally sweet-talked my last RE into bumping my meds up a bit. Three weeks later I got pg.

The moral of the story is to get the numbers and watch it yourself - don't let someone tell you it's "normal". Find a doctor who will treat you to a tsh below 2.0. I really do think it matters.
