Update on Thyroid, Hypo questions?

Got a call from the Endo today and my thyroid flip flopped from the surgery. It went from Hyper at TSH level of 0.03 to Hypo level 5.89. I am fully aware of all the problems as reseu;lt of Hyper but I am lost when it comes to hypo. What does hypo cause other than a slow metabolism? How does hypo effect IF? He is putting me on meds ...although I forget what I will pick them up and start them tonight.

I have hypothyroidism and my doc says that due to low activity of thyroid gland all the cells act slow, causing poor metabolism and laziness, getting tired too soon, gaining weight, dry skin and loss of hair and since cells work slow, ovaries are slow at producing eggs and that can cause irregular periods and ovulation.Infact in my case, irregular periods was the reason my hypothyroidism was diagnosed.I hope I am not scaring u.Actually,I've not really experinced any other probs except for my periods being irregular.I dont really feel tired and I've definitely gained weight but not too much ..
This is what my doc told me and I really dont mean to scare u.All the best!

Oh that doesn't scare me, I've had hyper thyroid disease for years and that one can be fatal due to heart attack and or stroke, and it's the same but different than hypo, hair falling out, irreg periods, secondary IF yadda yadda same old same old. If it's not too personal...what do they treat you with and how does it make you feel?

I am on Levothyroxin(Synthroid).I was intially on a lower dose as suggested by my family doc,but later it was increased by my RE while I was undergoing IVF.Honestly speaking I did not really have any symptoms except for irregular periods so I really did not feel better or worse after I started my pills and as far as my periods are concerned, they dont seem to b that regular even now.

I am also on Levothyroxin which is the same as Synthroid (50 mg) daily. In my case my symptoms were low body temperature, excessive weight gain and inability to lose the weight, dry skin, fatigue (I was sleeping 2-3 hours more a night and still was tired all day long). As Tulip mentioned above they say that because the cells are slow it can cause annovulation but doesn't always. I have been hypo for 4 years but I do ovulate every cycle, I've never been slow to respond to fertility meds and my egg quality is good. We questioned this however when our embryos arrested early and were slow growers from the beginning. As long as it is kept in check all should be fine. It's not uncommon for this to happen after having part of your thyroid removed.

I just found out yesterday that I too have
Hypothyroidism. My TSH is 9.68. I have an appointment with an endocrinologist. My RE is saying that this is what most likely caused my two m/c. Does anyone know how long it will take for my levels to me normal once on medication??

Katrina...GREAT question I too look forward to the answer.

The med my Endo is giving is Lvothyroxine 50 mcg/d and then a recheck in 6 weeks.

So maybe that 6 week recheck is the answer to how long it takes to be level.

Thanks Jen,
Hopefully it will only take 6 weeks. I really want to be able to start trying soon since we have now been waiting for 3 months since my last m/c and then waiting on all the results from the blood work. So emotionally I am really ready to start trying again. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will only take 6 weeks!

I'm not 100% sure on how long it will take to level out, but usually when one of my clients starts on Synthroid the doctor rechecks blood levels in one month. Unfortunately, sometimes the dosage of Synthroid has to be adjusted periodically, so it may take a little longer than the one month.

Good luck to you!
