TSH from 11.35 to .49

I constantly hear to get pregnant your TSH should be around 1.
Can anyone tell me about pregnancy for TSH levels that are below 1?

In late 2006 my TSH was 11.35 (yikes!).
The doctor put me on 50mcg of Levoxyl.
TSH went to 9.5 with 50 mcg
TSH went to 6 with 100 mcg

Then I found out (not from the doctor, but from you all on the forum) that taking my Levoxyl with my iron and calcium pills were preventing proper absorption.

Now I am taking the meds correctly and my
TSH went to .49 with 125 mcg

Is this too low for baby making? Should I now try to increase it? I have been focusing so much on lowering the levels and now I am worried that they are too low. I have researched and can not find any information.

What are your thoughts?

Most RE's will say anywhere between .5 and 1.5 is ideal. You should be fine at .5. Being on the lower side is definitely better than being on the higher side. During my last check, mine was .4 and the dr. was not concerned. It's ironic you should make this post. I have an appt with my dr. tomorrow to check my TSH levels again! I had a completion thyroidectomy in April, so they need to make sure my levels are all ok. I hope they are!

Gook luck! You should check with your RE to see how he/she feels about it, just to be on the safe side.

I think it's a difference of opinion because I've heard multiple figures. I was told that my TSH needed to be between 1-2 in order to have a successful pregnancy. My number has been between 1-2 for three years! My RE told me that as soon as I got pregnant they'd increase my dose to help sustain the pregnancy. Needless to say when I did conceive that was the first thing I wanted to have tested. Too bad my OB only tested my T4! Live and learn I guess.

Just an FYI... My level came back at .74 today, they were very happy with that.

DR's response

FYI---Here is my RE's response to the question:

"While there is no medical data to support this, many endocrinologists try to keep TSH levels less than 2 - 3. However, as long as the TSH level is in the normal range and you do not have symptoms, no additional dosage change should be necessary. The goal is maintain adequate thryoid replacement because the baby derives thyroid from the mother during the first trimester until it develops its own thryoid. Too low thyroid in the mother has been shown to reduce cognitive development in the baby and subsequent lower IQ scores. So, close monitoring during the pregnancy, about every 6 weeks is necessary to determine if dosage changes are needed."

Shelly---Awesome news about the 2nd BETA. Much baby dust and sticky dust for you!!

Thank you for that. I will definitely continue to have mine monitored. I wonder what "too low" is? Did you ask your Dr what is too low?
