secondary amenhorea (prob spelt wrong!) ie no periods for 3 and half years

Hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism and fertility - any advice?
Hi there - I am a newly signed up member!
Just to give you an outline....
I am 28 yr old female. I have had regular periods since aged 15, until 3 and half years ago when they suddenly stopped. I have been seeing an endochrinologist since. MRI scan showed nothing physically wrong in that area. I have repeatedly low, also suppressed, gonadotrophins (FSH and LH).

Me and my partner have been refered to reproductive medicine clinic now, with a view that after a hysterosalpingogram for me and a sperm count test for him, we will be considered for IVF.

Has anyone else had a smilar experience, and have then tried for a baby through IVF.....I would love to hear from you.

Kate

First of all WELCOME to the forum!

I had normal periods until i was about 18 or so that they began to get irregular. Didn't pay too much attention to it. i did go to the doctor and she suggested i take bcp's to regulate it, but since i was a teen and didn't care too much, just very happy that i wasn't getting my period, lololol.

long story short, i have pcos. After DH and i decided that we'd like to start our family we went to the doctor to get more info because i wasn't menstruating nor getting pregnant. Did all the testing, my FSH & LH were low as well. Then referred to RE. They put me on Metformin (1500mg) then tried clomid, then about 3 or 4 cycles of IUI's but with those either i wouldn't respond well or i'd respond too much. they couldn't control it very well. So we moved on to IVF, first cycle got pregnant, however, i m/c at 12wks.

i recommend you do a lot of research on pcos, since its very hard to determine the symptoms, but something to keep in mind.

hope this was helpful

how do they diagnose PCOS?

How did they diagnose your PCOS? I have read into it, and also asked about it, but am assured I do not have that.

Thank you x

i was diagnosed from having irregular periods, low FSH & LH level's and high testoterone (sp?) level.

the fact that you don't menstruate means your not ovulating. The RE i went to is Shady Grove Fertility and if you go to their website one of the doctors did a seminar that you can download to watch and its very good information.

also, if you do a search on 'pcos' on this forum i believe someone noted some information on it too.

Hi Kate,

I'm also 28 and have been without a period for about a year and a half. Totally unexplained. I don't have PCOS and went for an MRI which was also normal. My estrogen and progesterone levels are very low. My RE had me do two rounds of provera to try to get a period, but no luck. He then told me to gain about 10 pounds and "see what happens." This seemed like an odd request to me, but, I obliged and put on 10 pounds in a few months (it was fun actually!) I'm about a normal weight but he was worried that my BMI was too low which may prevent me from ovulating. But now, with a BMI of 21.5 (I'm 5'8 and 138 pounds) I still don't have a period and my estrogen and progesterone levels are still really low.

So, now we're undergoing our first round of IUI. Not too sure what to expect but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I did a little over one week of menopur injections and then did the trigger shot followed by IUI. Now I'm just playing the waiting game (I go for my pregnancy blood test one week from today).

Do you have a low body weight? Has your doc prescribed provera to try to bring on a period? Is your prolactin level normal?

hang in there!

Do you have an eating disorder? I had anorexia and did not get my period for 6 months. I have since gotten help but a lot of people who either are malnourished or who exercise a lot lose their period.

I went for 2 1/2 years without a period--after a pregnancy. My ob tried bc pills and that did not do anything. The RE tried me on hormone replacement therapy with estrace and adding prometrium. It did work and "kick-started" me to ovulate. I, too, had a low BMI, but the RE said that even with that, the bc pills should have worked. She said that I may have a "sluggish pituitary" or something like that. Hope this helps. Good luck to you. I have found that having a good RE is very valuable.
