Angry Might Be Losing My IVF Coverage

My DH found today that we may be getting laid off at the end of the month. They are downsizing his team from 39 people to 26 and as the saying goes last one hired, first one fired. We will know for sure on the 15th and then his last day at work would be the 29th.

We weren't counting on doing IVF#3n until next month because I haven't even had my CD3 testing since my surgery. Do you think if I talk to my doctors they will go ahead and start my cycle this month instead. I know it's risky but if I don't do it now I don't know when I'll be able to do it if ever.

I'm so depressed right now.

Kandygurl,

I am so sorry to hear this!! I say go for it and ask your RE if he or she can start your cycle asap! Can they do the CD3 testing sooner than later?

Your husband may be able to get COBRA (insurance extension) even after (and IF-you never know God works in mysterious ways!) he gets laid off. I would have him ask if he qualifies for COBRA, how much premiums would cost and if IVF would be covered through his COBRA. You may need to start your cycle before he officially gets put on COBRA. COBRA comes with a hefty monthly premium but if you only have to pay it for one or two months it would be worth it because it would be cheaper than paying for IVF out-of-pocket.

If that doesn't work I definitely say try to get your IVF cycle started sooner than later. Good luck and keep your spirits up!

Stacey

I agree with the previous poster. Start ASAP if medically possible. So sorry your situation. If IVF isn't stressful enough.

Even if you don't start you cycle, you can at least get you meds ordered. That way, if your insurance covers meds, you will definitely have those taken care of.

Yes, definitely check into COBRA. As far as I know it is a little more costly but you would have your same insurance coverage (but also check on the coverage too just to be sure).

Thanks

After talking with DH this evening for first order of business with regards to IVF is checking with our RE for starting our cycle early. After thinking about previous discussion with possible protocol's she was thinking estrogen priming and if that is the case stimming wouldn't start until next month. Whoa is me.

I'll be calling me RE first thing on Monday and we're keeping our that DH makes it through this unscathed for right now.

Thanks for the info on COBRA we will definitely inquire about all of our available options.

Definitely look into COBRA. This allows you to continue your exact same insurance coverage for the same monthly premium. The kicker is you have to pay your employer and employee's contribution to the premium (probably $400 a month). Everything else should stay the same. Still WAY cheaper than IVF.

COBRA is tricky. When my husband left his job, the monthly insurance went up by over 500 dollars. He usually contributed 200. Still cheaper than IVF. he keeps his job.

COBRA rates are based on what the company actually pays for insurance coverage for him + spouse. Additionally, most employeers will charge a 2% admin fee that is allowed by law to continue coverage.

COBRA is the exact same insurance coverage you had while an employee, nothing can be changed to the policy coverage per law.

It is best to have him sign up on the day you receive the COBRA election form and pay the premiums ASAP.

I know for our little non profit, cobra for emp+spouse would cost the employee just over 400 per month. I would estimate if you DH's co is large your premium would be between 400-800 per month - which is a small amount compared to an actual IVF self pay cycle.

save the money now!!! and be prepared - you will need COBRA coverage throughout the entire cycle and until you are released to an OB. The state should have some great programs for women who are pregnant with no coverage - or DH might have a new job with better coverage.

Good luck!!!!

Heart Thanks Ladies

The link to the Cobra infor was great. I totally agree that something is defintely better than nothing at this point when it comes to IVF.

My first order of business will be to talk with my RE to determine a timeline and if possible go ahead and at least order the meds. I'm feeling the early twinges of AF so I would say sometime around end of week I'll be in her office anyway for by CD3 BW.

But my DH and I are hoping that he will be safe and of cource I have to keep on a good face for him. This is his 3rd time being laid off in the last 5 years. Thankfully he has never gone more than a couple months without a job so we're hoping that if he is affected it then that same trend will apply.

I just wish all eomployers no matter what the state were required to provide IVF coverage. I work for a huge coampany even bigger than my DH but mines will only cover diagnostic. We will know the verdict on the 15th and his last day of work would be the 29th. He hasn't read all of the fine print yet but we're hoping they will give us extended coverage for at least another 60 days.

HI Charms-Can't believe your induction day is this month. You were one of the first people to welcome me to this forum and now look at you. Congrats hon I know you can't wait to hold this little one in your arms. I'm rooting for you.

Embarazada-Your ET is tomorrow are you exicted, scared, nervous?

Azariah-Glad to see you coming along.

Tree-When is your Beta?

Belinda-I be praying for you and a positive Beta this Friday

Stacy Congrats on your twins. How are you feeling with two kicking around in there. Have you been told the sex yet?

Hi Laura-Thanks. I've been following your aoption story and even took a look at your portfolio. Good luck with your home study tomorrow. You and DH will do great and make such perfect parents.

Kandygurl - that really sucks!! I'm hoping that doesn't come true. I agree with the others, I would definitely talk with the RE office, and I would check into COBRA. I know the premiums are high, but if you guys can swing it, it's definitely less than paying for IVF as a self pay. Good luck to you sweetie, and I hope you get better news soon.

Thumbs up I little Reprieve

Just found out that if DH is downsized that we will still have medical coverage for 60 days.

We will be moving to IL by beginning of next year so if I don't get a in the next 90 days then at least we may have options going in to the next year.

Thanks ladies for all the positive responses and suggestions. It definitiely helped to keep me sane over the last week.

I feel rearing her ugly head now I just wish she would get here already.
