Need advice..cancellation of 3rd IVF cycle

Hello everyone--

I am so depressed and need advice. I am currently receiving infertility treatment at a large metropolitan
clinic FCI. Although they have some of the highest success rates in the area, I am questioning the
competence of the staff/physicians. I am currently undergoing my 3rd stimulation phase. The first had
to cancelled after the careless RN gave me inaccurate instructions and I subsequently recevied too much medication and hyperstimulated. At the beginning of my second stim cycle I became ill with Pleurisy so I cancelled the cycle. I am now on Day 10 of my third stim cycle(12 follicles, largest 10.5) and I was informed today that this cycle may need to be cancelled due to slow ovarian response. I am very upset. My response is slower than previously because the MD started me on a very low dose of Follistem (75mcg) for the first 5 days of the cycle. which leads me to question his competance. Moreover, I am not very happy with the nurses. They appear rather indifferent and do not provide any patient teaching--as everything I have learned about the IVF process has been from this blog or via Google!

I was told by the nurse today that many women can complete several stim cycles before they reach egg retrieval. Is this true?? Please help.

I'd say if you're not happy with the staff then go elsewhere. I found it to very important to have compassionate, knowlegable staff to get through this process, it's hard enough as it is already.

Maybe that's why their success rates are so high - if they cancel a lot of cycles before retrieval. I met a woman who was going to my clinic right before her retrieval and she only had 2 follicles and they were going to do it anyway. I know one girl was cancelled from my clinic after retrieval because of hyperstim problems but then she did an FET afterwards.
I'm sorry you have been cancelled so many times! Maybe you should get a 2nd opinion.

Follistem (75mcg) for the first 5 days is really low dose. If I were you,I will change to a new clinic. Good luck!

Obviously, you are uncomfortable with this clinic. I would get a 2nd opinion and possibly move to another one.

Hopeful,

I would definitely recommend looking for a new clinic. I hyperstimmed during several cycles but they were never canceled but rather I had the eggs retrieved and fertilized and then later returned for a FET. And the practice that I use now is similar to one that Sprink mentioned in that, they will do a retrival even if there's only 1 or 2 egss because it's honestly not about the quantity. So, I would say now is a great time for you to get a copy of your records and start exploring other practices. Best Wishes!

I live in Illinois and went to FCI briefly. The RE was pleasant enough but the staff there was a different story. After deciding not to return to the Highland Park location, I went to the River North location for us and blood work for the out of state clinic I go to. I received a hematoma on my right arm and a verbal lashing about how I should have gotten my bloodwork done before my us. Now the us was so rough I felt violated. I would definitely try other places if you are not happy. There are many people who cycled out side of Chicago d/t the low SART and CDC percentages for the local docs.

Thank you everyone for all of your support. You have provided me with very helpful information and have
also reaffirmed that my concerns are in fact valid.

I plan to be begin my search for a new MD this weekend.

i have not heard of women completing several cycles before egg retrieval. I think she is feeding u a line of stuff. I would switch if I felt that uncomfortable....take it from someone who switched after 2yrs of b/s and then found my new RE who has gotten me pg twice in less time
