How severe should morning sickness symptoms be before we worry?

Hi all! This is actually DABob typing for Tamtam. She is having nausiousness which is normal for morning sickness but it gets severe if she doesn't eat on a regular basis. Then it combines with severe abdominal cramps that are just pure pain. After she eats, she is still nausious but then gets weak & dizzy to the point she collapsed into bed when we got home. She's been going thru the feeling hot & cold. Anyone else going thru this? Any suggestions on easing the symptoms? Thanks,

Bob

I think you should call the doc and give them her symptoms and see what they say.

I've been going through this since 8 weeks pregnant. i've actually lost over 10 pounds and dry heave so hard I've pulled the muscles in my stomach which scared the crap out of me.

I've bee told to take 50mg of benadryl and it has helped. Also jolly ranchers have been a big help, try gingerale to stay hydrated as well.

Dr. can prescrib a med to help i've chosed to hold off two more weeks before going that route. I'm hoping by 18 weeks it will subside.

She actually hasn't thrown up at all. She's been using Pregnancy Pops and they work okay. We'll try the benadryl.

I got sick everytime i ate, usually within 10 mins of getting done. Later in the evening i got sick everytime i stood up. It got to the point i didnt want to eat. The Dr said to try popsicles, crackers or frozen grapes. I ended up going on Zofran cuzi couldnt even keep water down and had to have 2 iv fluids. You can ask the Dr about that and maybe that would help.

My doctor told me that as long as I wasn't throwing up 4 or 5 times a day and staying hydrated that she wouldn't worry. All I could eat was pretzels and bland chicken soup for the first 3 months. The cramping doesn't sound good. You might want to check with the doc about that. Some days I couldn't get out of bed. Luckily, I only work part time. There is NO WAY I could have worked a full time job. Most days I didn't make it off the couch. I'm so sorry that Tam is feeling so bad. It's really important to try to keep something in her tummy. I know it's hard, but it will be much worse with an empty stomach. I just used trial and error to see what made me the least nauseus.

I'm so sorry she's feeling this bad... Morning/afternoon/evening sickness is so hard to deal with when you're one of those who truly suffer from it. (I'm one of them, so I know what she's going through)

Her symptoms concern me, however, because you mentioned she goes from hot to cold, and has the severe abdominal cramps etc. I think she might want to check with the doctor, because there's always a chance she's picked up a stomach virus... and you don't want that to get out of hand, right?

Good luck. I hope she's feeling much better soon!

thanks for the info:
I want to clear up what dh said.
1. When I get hungry and then the cramps are at the top definately stomach, but not uterine....it feels like my stomach is literally cramping up..just severe hunger pains to the point that as I try to eat it still hurts for a minute or two
2. I have usually mild m/s itself. I am just queasy in the norm and the pops help. However, the only time i get close to tossing cookies is when I am really hungry before a meal. I sometimes feel it after eating the meal.
3. I get what I have read are pregnancy induced hot and cold flashes. They are a bother, but not horrid

I am only concerned about the stomach cramping around an empty stomach right now

Tam, you have to eat often and small portions. Eating more protein really helps - eggs, peanut butter, nuts, chicken, fish, steak, etc. I did not have severe m/s but I did have the nausea every time I let myself get too hungry. Try keeping crackers and peanut butter by your bed and eat a little before you even get up. Try eating 6 smal meals a day and it should help. I hope you feel better.

It also sounds a little like severe indigestion, and that's a vicious cycle when you're in morning sickness.
You have to eat to prevent getting more nauseus, then when you do it burns and cramps and hurts. Bleccchhh!

Try taking a Tums now and then and see if it helps; either that, or make sure you drink Perrier or sparkling mineral water, and try to burp after a meal. I realize that sounds disgusting, but it might help.

The dr. also has me on pepcid for the heartburn which has contributed to my m/s.

Ask you dr what they recommend. I know tums does nothing to help relieve but it does give me the calcium I need :0

Tam, I am taking B6 (100 mg a day). That has really helped me. Lacey on the March due date thread is also taking it, and I think it has helped her as well. A new study out says to avoid peanuts as they may increase the chance of your baby developing asthma. Just thought I'd share that last part.

Tam-do NOT let yourself get hungry. Force yourself to eat something, even it if is small, at least every 2 hours. Also, if you just can't function, call your Dr. and ask for Zofran. It is perfectly safe for pregnancy. I took it for about 8 weeks and it really helps, within 5 minutes of taking it I started feeling better. You can take 2/day. the preggie pops didn't do anything for me and I don't like ginger. If you find it hard to eat, do NOT drink anything while eating. Your stomach will fill up faster with fluids (then you pee them out then feel crappy again).

Jana-do you have a link to that peanut study? Personally it sounds like BS to me. I find it hard to make that leap...

Here's the link: Asthma risk from eating nuts during pregnancy - Pregnancy - MSNBC.com

Jen, I read the article too, but I refuse to stop eating things with peanuts. I think it's important to note that the risk was increased only for those who ate peanuts or peanut products daily. Peanut butter is one of the staples for many pregnant women and is such a good source of protein. I think that if a person follows the everything in moderation rule, then almost anything is ok during pregnancy. Just my opinion.
