Help Needed- What do you do after Ist BFN

Hello Everyone.
First and foremost, i would like to thank everyone for thier continued support through out this entire process.

We got our Ist yesterday and we were devastated. I really dont know how to proceed further...

We are meeting with our RE on tuesday to discuss further..But could you guys suggest what else should we be doing...

Should we get a second opinion or is it too soon?

Can anyone suggest a good RE in the central NJ region?

My current RE is good and I know that IVF is a matter of chance . I am not quite sure if I should go for a second cycle with him or may be change my RE.

I am so frustrated and confused... Please help...

After our 1st BFN we met the RE and since at the time we both had unexplained infertility he ordered just one more test. He had us do a SIS- Saline Infused Sonogram. This checks the uterus thoroughly. The HSG kinda checks it but its more about the focus on the tubes. When they did they found a small mass and scheduled the hysteroscopy/laparatomy to remove it a few weeks later. They believe that when the embryos were transferred on IVF#1 they went to the mass and not the lining. As you can see by my signature all is well on the second try after they found and removed the issue. I was able to cycle fairly soon after.

Good luck! I wish you the very best on your next cycle.

I am so sorry that your first IVF did not work for you. I can understand how you feel, with ours we didn't even make it to transfer so that was pretty hard for us. As for what to do next, just go in for your follow up and see what your options are. In your signature you list that you had a lap 05/05 is that May 5 or May of 2005? It might need redone if it's been a few years. As for the PCOS insulin resistence are they treating that in any way? What about your high TSH? As someone who does suffer from an underactive thyroid I have had to pay close attention to where my TSH level sits. It should be between 1-2 to help sustain a normal and healthy pregnancy. I say see if you can get these things in line and then try again. But if you feel you need a break to do so, then go ahead. I took almost a two year break between my third IUI and my one and only IVF cycle. Sometimes they are necessary for your physical, mental and emotional well being.

I think the first BFN for IVF is the hardest. The whole thing is so new: needles, drugs, ultrasounds, etc. Just wrapping your brain around all the procedures is exhausting. The expectations are so high for the first try. I started the journey knowing that I would try 6 times (3 fresh and 3 frozen cycles). Even though I knew that I had more chances, the first BFN was still hard. My BFN for the second time was just as hard emotionally, even though the frozen cycle was much easier on my body. The third try (fresh), was still a tough road, even though I knew what to expect. Now, my stories of fertility tx impress my fellow pregnant ladies in my childbirth class. Think of your pain as a badge of honor when you too are taking a childbirth class. Don't give up!

Thanks so much for the support. My Lap was done in May 2005. So I guess thats one thing that I am going to discuss with my RE ...

Tryinhard I noticed you asked for recommendations of RE's in central jersey. I know it may be a little bit of a distance, but I have an AWESOME RE in south jersey. The practice is called South Jersey Fertility Center and they have offices in Marlton, Sewell, and Egg Harbor Township. My primary RE there is Dr. Packin and I love him! They are also awesome with getting you in very quickly for consults and everything else. I dont know if the Marlton office would be too far for you, but if its a possibility, I would check it out. They have a website you can look at too.

So sorry about your BFN. I hope you have piece of mind in whatever step you do next. Good Luck!!

Trying hard -- I'm so sorry -- it just really sucks. No other words for it. Even though I knew what my results would be, I took it pretty hard. I think I needed the time to just let myself feel disappointed and sad and then decide how to gear up for the next cycle. I made my appt to see my RE a few weeks after receiving the result to give myself a chance to write down questions and not feel so emotionally raw. I think it has helped and I am now looking forward to talking to my doctor and have lots of ideas about the next cycle. I am even feeling (dare I say it?) hopeful and excited. It will happen for us -- you'll see.

I am so very sorry for your BFN. We had ours in July so I know exactly how you feel. We have a great little thread that is hard to find, but you can follow this link and join us.....Support and discussion after BFN ....if you feel up to it.

DH and I have had 2 consults with 2 new RE's plus a follow up with the one we used for our 1st IVF.

After reading a post on this forum, I made an appt with RMA of NJ. They have a clinical study going on that we are going to be in (we just have one last test) I am not sure where you were going, but I really liked our consult there. They have 4 offices in NJ. Feel free to PM me if you need anymore information.

First, I am so sorry that your cycle ended this way......as someone else said, it just sucks. We had our 1st failed IVF in May, as you, we were devistated. The anticipation of every milestone is so great, that it hurts so much when it ends this way.....

In our case, we took a few months to heal before we even had our post-cycle appt with RE. We have had the same discussions, do we do 2nd opinion? different tx? Your questions and feelings are valid, and only you and DH on your terms will find your answers.....

As far as other things you should be doing, we started researching "natural" ways to help with our issues (low counts, mild endo) and have been on our own vitamin regimen (sp?) for the past few months.

Good luck to you, and I'll be that you find peace and the strength to continue on your journey.

I"m so sorry for your BFN.

We had one failed fresh and one failed frozen with our RE and now are changing. I would definitely check the SART site to be sure that your RE's success rates are at least comparable to those of other clinics in your area. We liked our RE, but found that we were not at the clinic with the best success rates and decided that nomatter how we "feel" about the Dr., the rates speak for themselves.

Good luck to you whatever you decide!
