Antral follicle count -- Left ovary vs. right??

Hey Guys, I'm confused about something and hoping someone can shed some light. I know we are born with all the eggs that we have and our antral follicle count is a way of telling how many years we have left.

But how come I have almost double on my right side than my left? Is this normal? why aren't they spread out evenly to both sides? For example, my last antral follicle count, I had 6 on my left side and 11 on my right. Similarly, when I stimulate, they always exract more from my right side than my left. Last cycle I had 18 eggs extracted and 12 were on my right and 6 came from the left.

What gives?

I have the same thing and it's very common. My right is also the active player. The left never seems to respond to the meds, but the right does great. My RE (yesterday in fact) was just going over this with me. There are ways to stim the left to join the party, but likely it will never produce like the right does. A lot of times this is the case that one ovary will respond much more than the other.

Interesting.

What did your RE say could be done to help the left side along?

My Right Ovary always produced more than the left. My sono lady said the Left one looked a little smaller than the right so maybe that's why it doesn't produce as much.

I'm in the same boat. My right side is my big producer. They retrieved 6 of the 7 at my last retrieval from my right side and I always stimulate better on the right side.

Interesting that this happens to quite a few of us. Is there anything that has been suggested to help the slower side maximize it's potential??

If the antral follicles are there, and we have lots left, I wonder why one side doesn't produce a lot. Is it because our uterus is shifted more to one side and there isn't enough phsyical space on that side?

Anyone know the reason why? Or what to do about it?

Post Re: Antral follicle count -Left ovary vs. right??

There's an article that attempts to explain why most women are right ovary dominant rather than left. Most seem to think it's something to do with superior drainage of the vena cava.

Interestingly, one study suggested that dominance switches from right to left as the supply is exhausted.
I wonder if this is what's happened with me- I'm 36 and have DOR - almost all of my follicles are on my left.

Here's the link to the article :
