OHSS Anyone??

Hi Ladies, Is there anyone out there that has experienced OHSS Mild, Moderate or Severe?? I am currently doing IUI with injectables and may be moving onto IVF at some point, but I just finished an injectable cycle last week (IUI on the 14th) and I went in for my f/u u/s yesterday and my RE diagnosed me with OHSS. I have been experiencing alot of bloating, moderate abdominal pain and some slight nausea. My RE just said to "take it easy" and he had me do the booster HCG shot. I've researched online but I would like to hear from anyone who experienced OHSS first hand. I'm wondering, can you take in two many fluids while trying to stay hydrated? Are there foods I should stay away from to help resolve my OHSS? How do I know if too much fluid is pooling in my abdominal cavity and needs to be removed? Has anyone had OHSS and still conceived? I've read that women doing IVF can experience this so I thought I would post here as well as in the injecatble threads. Thank you and to all...

I had OHSS last cycle, and it was on an IUI cycle and I only ovulated two eggs. There was a ton of fluid in my adomen, so much that it pressed on my bowel and my bladder. I felt horrible. My RE told me that if I had gotten pregnant that cycle it would have gotten worse before it got better. But if AF showed I would feel a whole lot better. AF showed and the symptoms subsided a lot. But the duration before that was horrible. I was miserable. I drank tons of gatorade and boost with added protein.

I had severe OHSS after our ivf cycle. I was pregnant so it got worse and my ovaries were still very large at 12 weeks of pregnancy. Drink gatorade or drinks with electrolytes, make sure you are going to the bathroom a lot, eat protein, don't do too much, like almost bedrest. If you have problems breathing you probably have fluid in your lungs and may have to have it drained. I had my lung drained then had really bad pain in my stomach a few days later, and my dr admitted me to the hospital and had the lung drained again and then a drain in my abdomen for just under 2 weeks. Also if you are not going to the bathroom very much, then that is not good and you should call your dr.
I haven't delivered yet, but I'm getting closer and the OHSS drama is beginning to fade.
I hope yours doesn't get too bad! Good luck!

You're in my thoughts.

I'm really scared of this, too. I'm preparing for my trigger (has been moved to Friday, doing a second day of Ganirelix to try and get my system under control). Estradiol levels are at 7400, I'm showing over 30 follies.

I'm drinking a ton of Powerade Zero (electrolytes, but no calories/sugar). I loaded up on Smart Water, too. I also got myself some Ensure - High Protein. The nurse this a.m. strongly recommended I increase my salt intake (chicken noodle soup, french fries, beef jerky, etc.), as that helps. It seems totally counterintuitive and like it would make you retain MORE water, but it seems to head some of this stuff off.

Hi Gracie. Just wanted to say so sorry to hear about your OHSS. I hope you feel better soon. I don't have any experience with it, but it seems like the ladies here have some good advice (as always). I moved over to the IVF threads since we are planning to move on to IVF as soon as we can start treatment again. Wishing you lots of and and I'll be watching for your !

Hi Gracie,

My RE asked me to start taking something called PreProtein, I buy it at Costco. It helps prevent OHSS and drink lots of fluid, especially sports drink that have electrolytes and help you eliminate fluid without dehydrating you. Good Luck!

I had mild-moderate OHSS with my last cycle (which was a BFP- Good LUCK!) and I only had 3 follicles. I drank a lot of Gatorade and tried to eat protein or have protein shakes. Stay away from salty foods and anything that would make you retain more fluids like soy sauce.

Mine got worse but luckily by week 8 it started to subside. It never made it to my lungs but I did notice I was short of breath and was constantly weighing myself. My RE suggested anything more than 3 lbs. in a day to see him and anything close or above 5lbs go to the ER.

Good luck I hope it subsides quickly and leaves you with a BFP.

I have OHSS now. I think I am over the worst part. At least I pray to God I am...I have it pretty bad. I was reluctant to go to Hospital because I did not want to have it ruin my chance of being pregnant...My OHSS got severely bad after ER...Then on day of ET, the RE said it was looking like I have it borderline...Well the way I looked and was feeling did nto feel like borderline...But after about a week of hell..Tons of gatorade, salt intake and lots of protien...I am alive again...I also have continued lots of salt on my foods, tons of gatorade and protein....My beta is not until Monday but RE did say that if I am pregnant that it may come back even worse....Oh Man I thought I was going to die...I could nto breath...It was horrible...Now my abdomen feels tender, it is swollen a bit...But I can pinch skin and before there was nothing left to pinch. It was so huge...Ughh...But I am thankful it seems to be clearing up...Good luck to you...

whey protein magic

Hi all,

This is my first infertility post after reading everyone's stories for years.... We are finally to IVF and I guess I finally feel offiical....

In any case, I just wanted to pass on what I experienced with OHSS - I had over 30 follicles, 24 eggs retrieved, 14 fertilized and 11 embryos so far... I get another call tomorrow. But about the OHSS - I gained 5lbs in one day even though I was drinking protein shakes and gatorade three times a day. But then I looked again at the sheet my RE gave me and it says that I needed to consume 80 grams of protein a day. That is 6 scoops of protein powder a day - which is ALOT! - twice as much as I had been eating. However, once I doubled my protein intake to 80 grams a day, it really did help. The next day I lost 5lbs in water weight and really started to feel much better. I know this won't be a cure for everyone but I just thought I would share in case it could help someone.

Take care and good luck to everyone - you are right, this is tough stuff and I am even a nurse who should be used to all this!!

whey protein cont...

Hey Gracie,

Thanks for the kind words of encouragement! Here's to you getting your BFP this November too!!

I didn't plan to cut out anything really - but consuming 3 shakes a day with 80 grams of protein really fills a gal up so I haven't been eating too much besides the shakes.

I do have a piece of whole wheat toast for breakfast and a shake, maybe a little soup or small bit of leftovers with a shake for lunch, dinner I give myself a break so I can have a real meal and then another shake before bed. So no real plans to limit bad carbs but with so much protein, some limiting just comes naturally.

Take care,
-Anna

Anyone's symptoms got better then got worse??

Did any of you ladies notice if your symptoms started to get better and then got worse? I'm feeling a little better but I'm wondering if that is a sign that I'm not going to get the BFP this month. Still somewhat bloated, soar bb's, and abdominal pain but not as bad as a few days ago. I'm 6 dpiui.

Hey There!

Well, back in September I ended up with OHSS - a VERY horrible case of it. I started Clomid & Gonal-F for my IUI, but I responded to well to it (for a IUI treatment) and ended up with over 40 follies, which 20+ of those were actually measurable! They said if I were doing IVF I would have been perfect, but since our insurance doesn't cover ANY of our IF treatment, we haven't been able to get that far yet.

Any How.... we had to cancel our IUI. They said nothing to me about OHSS. I started to get very sick like feelings and bloating, etc. but when I contacted the office they said to take extra strength tylenol and to come see them in 2 weeks, since I was leaving for out of town. I said ok... never even thinking OHSS, I wasn't even really familiar with what that was. I started to swell quite a bit, but figured I was okay until I went in 2 weeks.

Well, took our flight, got to our destination and as soon as my sister seen me, she said: GO TO THE ER!!! I felt 10 times worse just from the flight. I went to the ER and they did tons of tests, ultrasounds, etc. and decided they were transporting me in an ambulance to a different hosp. that would have more knowledge of this.

Finally, got to the other hosp. did more tests and there I was told I was PREGNANT (since DH & I had intercourse the morning they ended up telling us our treatment was canceled)!!!! I was so excited, but now this definitely made my case of it SOOOOOOOO much worse.

I was admitted into the hosp! My kidneys were starting to fail, I was as big as an 8 month pregnant woman from all the fluid. I had fluid in my lungs and so on! I couldn't hardly walk, couldn't eat anything, so I was just on IV's. They released me the following day, but had to go back the day after to get a follow up. I ended up back in the ER because my pulse was over 150 and my blood-pressure was way toooooo high. I was there awhile, but got me down a little bit and allowed me to leave, but I had to cancel my trip short and fly back home and go straight to see my RE.

Now, during all this, my ovaries were the size of FOOTBALLS!!!!! They started under my breasts and went all the way down to my lower abdominal area. It was painful. I had to be very careful since any little touch could rupture my ovaries, but luckily it didn't come to that.

I had to go to RE appts. 2 sometimes 3 times a week! Like everyone else said, drink lots of fluids & eat lots of protein.

I just recently lost our pregnancy Which hurt so bad already, but after going through the OHSS so badly (more severe since I was pregnant) it hurt even more. It was worth it all even though we lost our twins! I am still (since Sept.) got slight symptoms, which are getting better now after my D&C, but my ovaries are still enlarged, not quite as bad as they were.

I also had lots of pressure since all my organs were pressed together since there was so much fluid. I refused to get my fluid drained because I was worried it would harm my pregnancy, but others choose to get it done to take away from some of the pain. After all the fluid I gained 30 lbs (just of the fluid), but after my symptoms started going down SLOWLY, I have now actually lost 40 lbs, so I am 10 lbs lighter then before it all started... even before my D&C.

I wish you the best of luck and I am sorry you are going through the OHSS. I know this may sound silly, but I would take a with OHSS then a and no OHSS. I hope it don't happen to me again, but if I had to choose... I would suffer to have a healthy little baby/babies!!!!

Take Care!
