Allergies from the Progesterone Shot?

Hey ladies....just checking in to see if any of you experienced any sort of allergy from the Progesterone shot. I get extremely itchy and get some hives...I am not sure if this is from the Progesterone or something else....

I don't personally have experience with this but I do know that most progesterone is in sesame oil so many people have sensitivity to this. It is available in many other oils, including olive and peanut. I would ask your RE about switching you to another type. Good luck!

Hey there, I'm sure a true allergy is possible, and like Ami said, there is PIO in other forms of oil. I got huge raised, red, itchy welts from the PIO. If I got hot/warm (I was doing them in August) then my whole backside would start itching! I went in to my RE's office about it, and showed them what was going on, and they said it wasn't an allergy, just a reaction to the shots and that it's common. I never developed hives though at a site further away, which kind of sounds more like a real allergy. So I'd let your doc know! Good luck!

Hi -

This happened to me. At first, I was just red, sore, and itchy at the injection site, which is very common, but as the days went on, I developed full body itching and hives. My RE switched me to progesterone suppositories, and my symptoms lessened, but still continued. I finally went to an allergist and was tested for allergies to a ton of things, but in the end they deemed it was just hormonal and would subside with time. (The progesterone suppositories come with a warning not to take them if you are allergic to peanuts, but the injections do not.) I took Zyrtec every day and stopped the progesterone at 10 weeks. By 12 weeks my symptoms had disappeared and none have returned since . . . . knock wood!

If the symptoms become too annoying, I would ask your RE about them. Maybe he could switch to a different injection formula, like Ami mentioned, or a different delivery of the progesterone. Good luck!

I developed large itchy red welts during this last cycle on 2cc of PIO in sesame oil, but had no problems while on 1cc during my July cycle. The welts showed up at the injection site as well as other places on my backside and hips. They itched like crazy and drove me bonkers. Cortisone cream helped a little, but just enough to keep me from scratching all the time - so I was only scratching most of the time. I switched to olive oil and that helped, but I still had welts they just weren't as itchy and were smaller.

Hi. I used progesterone in sesame oil and should have known better because I'm allergic to sesame. I get very, very itchy palms and soles of my feet. My RE switched me to olive oil and I had no problem after that.

Good luck!

PIO can be mixed in a variety of oil choices. Check with the RE or pharmacist.
