Need an idea of drug costs

My wife and I are planning to do IVF in the near future. I wanted to get an idea of what to expect for drug costs. My dr gives a range, but won't narrow it down. The doxicycline and birth control will be covered by insurance, so I'm not worried about those. We're also fortunate enough to have a relative who works for Serono who is getting us the Gonal F. So I assume all we will need to pay out of pocket for will be the Lupron and HCG shot. Is there a standard dosage of these and can someone give me an idea of what they will cost? Any tips to get them cheaply? I see websites that sell them, but I have no idea where these companies are (ie: Mexico, Canada, etc).

Lupron I bought costed about $200. I don't think the HCG shot costed very much. However I am sure you will have to buy more medication than that after the transfer.
I was on Endometrin 3xday. 1 week supply of that costed me $150. I had to take it almost 9weeks. They also had me on Vivelle dot patch.

Overall I spent about $3500 - $4000 on medications. I was told to expect around $2 - $3K. I was not on Gonal F. We used Menopur and Bravel. Those two constituted the bulk of the above cost.

Hope this helps.

I am getting Leuprolide (generic for Lupron) from Metro Drugs for $99 for a two week kit. They sell the Ovidrel (HCG shot) for $89.99 but I found out that Freedom Pharmacy has it for $44.25 so I plan to get that from there. Both are in the U.S. but I got my Menopur from IVFmeds.com which in Europe cause they were a lot cheaper. My RE wanted me to order everything else in the states because of possibly needing refills and it takes longer to get it from Europe, but I wish I could have ordered everything from IVFmeds.com cause they were cheaper on everything. They are all online, just call them if you want to know where they are...good luck.

just a ballpark figure, but make sure that you check with your insurance carrier, somethings they will cover even if they don't cover IVf

Lupron 100
Trigger shot 40
Follistim 600 - 1000
Menapur 75 per vial - need for 10 - 14 days

I hope that this help and also check out different pharmacies, they have different prices for the different drugs and some will have certain drugs cheaper than others because they have a deal with the producers.

good luck

Gonal F would be your most expensive one, so if you have access to that for free you're golden. Gonal F is equivalent to Follistim (same drug, different brands), so be sure to tell your doctor that you have access to gonal F so he'll prescribe that one.

I've heard good things about ivfmeds.com based in the UK - the only thing is that they can't do an overnight shipment so you have to plan ahead a bit.

Other pharmacies to look at are Schraffts, Alexander's Twin, and Freedom. I've heard good things about them, and they are US based.

You may have more coverage than you think - have the doctor's office at least try to run it through your insurance. I was shocked to find I was covered. That was completely unexpected. Lupron doesn't always fall under the fertility drug category, so you have coverage for that one anyway.

Good luck!!

See if you can get them through your clinic. My clinic does that for our patients. We get Lupron for $99 and generic hCG (as good or better than the name brands) for just over $30.

I used MDR. They are wonderful! They price match as well. I wasn't comfortable using a pharm. outside the US.

As far as the cost, I spent $2000 or so on meds. It is hard to say because sometimes meds have to be adjusted during the cycle up or down. That is why they only give you an estimate.

Good luck!
