Devastated...day 6 stims and only 4 follies.

I had my blood and ultrasound this morning and I only have four follies (2 on each ovary). The doctor flat out said it wasn't good as I'm on a very aggressive protocol. They are going to call me this afternoon but I'm scared this is the end of the road... so fast and unexpected. I really thought this would work. Poor ovarian response...

My FSH levels ar 5.7 - I just don't understand...

Do you think they will cancel my IVF cycle and give me one last shot with an IUI??? I'm so sad and confused... *weeping* All I could think about when I left was never holding my beautiful baby.

I am in the same boat, so don't feel alone. I went in Wednesday on my 5th day of stims and only had 3 follies. My Re told me that if all 3 mature they may consider going ahead with IVF. Otherwise, they would suggest converting to IUI. I go back in the morning to see how they are doing.

I know how you feel. It is very frustrating. Do you know what your antral follicle count was on your baseline u/s? Mine was only 1 so we figured I would have a very poor response.

My Re basically said if they think 3 or 4 is the best it will ever get then they will proceed but if they think there is something else that can be done or that there is a possibility you might respond better on a different month then they convert to IUI. He said they will also take into consideration what the patient wants. If you end up with four good mature follies they may go ahead with it because I have seen women on here that have done it with less and ended up with a .

I will say a prayer for you!

I am so sorry Brooklyn. Let's see what the RE says. Were you on an antagonist or agonist protocol? It could be that you will respond better to another protocol so this isn't necessarilt the end of the road. And, if he can get all 4 follies, then there isn't a need to cancel the cycle. Remember...it only takes one!

I am praying for you. You deserve to hold that baby you are dreaming of.

Brooklyn, I'm so sorry. I'm in the exact same boat, I went in for US today and have 3 follies measuring 8-11 on my left and 1 measuring 12-13 on my right (with 2 very small ones not even measureable). My dr. has warned me that there is a chance we will have to cancel; this is the response they would have liked to see at day 3 of stims. I'm very sad, started crying in front of the dr and everything. I go back in tomorrow for another US and we'll see how much growth we've had make a decision then. I was so excited to start this cycle and so hoping the 1st time would work. I have a allowance for how much $ my insurance will pay out for IF treatment and it's enough to go through 2-3 cycles. On one hand i think it makes sense to cancel (if the odds of a sucessful cycle are low) and save our ins. money for another cycle next month, But we were getting so close and now We'll have to wait. It's so unfair!

Let me know what the Dr. says. I'll that things go the way you want! Hang in there.

Brooklyn.....I am so sorry I am hoping and praying for you that they will still continue on. I just thought with your great e2 numbers that all would be well. As JustOneMore said if it does not work this time maybe they could use a different protocol next time.

Oh girls, I'm so sorry for all of you as well. It was so sad, I cried in front of the doctor as well. As he was looking at my left ovary I asked how many, he said two (I knew that wasn't good) then after he looked at my right I said how many, he said two and I started bawling.

He called me about an hour ago and got me to come in immediately to pick up my Orgalutron and take some immediately to stop ovulation. He said he would like to continue for two days because my E2 numbers are going up nicely - it is now at 1365.

I'm praying that this will work out and I'm praying for you girls as well

Brooklyn, I am so happy for you that your RE decided to press on!!! Positive thoughts, this WILL work. You have great e2 numbers. Better than mine have ever been at ER.

I don't mean to just jump into your thread, but I wanted to share something with you. I'm in my 2nd cycle and both cycles, I responded slowly and poorly. First cycle, I only had 4 follicles, retrieved 3 eggs, 2 fertilized and 2 transferred... unfortunately, it was a BFN. My current cycle, I had 5 follicles, retrieved 3 eggs, 2 fertilized, and now I'm waiting for my transfer (of 2 hopefully) on Sat.
My e2 levels were really low (under 1000 both cycles) and obviously I never got very many follicles, but luckily my RE's decided to continue the cycle, because having 2 good graded embryos to transfer is very worthwhile... it only takes one! I hate to hear that your RE's are discouraging you about your cycle, because some of us are only going to get a few follicles/eggs per cycle and it's always worth a shot. Trust me, I was very disappointed to go through an aggressive protocol (2-4 injections a day, plus daily bloodwork & US) and only get 2 embryos, but for me my chance of getting pregnant on my own is probably zero... I'd much rather have 2x the chance. I hope this encourages you to continue your cycle and stay positive because it can happen. Good Luck!

What is a good number?

I'm confused.
I'm new to this (haven't gone through anything yet -- still in testing mode), but four sounds like a good number to me!!

Maybe it's because my RE is recommending that we will (probably) only transfer one embryo anyway, so it seems to me that they don't need you to have a LOT of eggs to get just one good one, right?

This leads me to ask, how many does it take to be considered a "good" number?

Tanter, my RE says 7 to 15 is perfect...they prefer quality over quantity.

I'm praying with all I have in me that we are able to proceed, if not, I'm hopeful that I can still IUI this cycle and maybe get a BFP - I do have four eggies right
