progesterone injection too low.....now what?

Well, my dear husband is getting sloppy about my PEO injections. I love him to death, but he is getting to where he doesn't even look and last week he didn't even inject it all and I had to change the needle and restab myself....that was fun.

Anyhow, tonight he went in my bum cheek.....not even close to the hip/outer upper quadrant. I know I need to draw him a circle with a sharpie....but seriously do I have to walk around with sharpie circles for the next 4-5 weeks LOL

So now what.....do I need to redo the shot? I take 1cc a night, and at my second BETA the nurse said my P4 was 'above 20' but didn't tell me if it was right above 20 or way above.....I guess I should have asked.

Anyhow, now I'm panicked about the low shot, and asked hubby if he'd do another one tonight and he said no, he didn't feel right about it.....great. What to do...what to do.

Indie - so sorry! my DH is terrified with needles too... I coudln't even get him to start injecting me with Lupron at first. I showed him the needle he will be using for the POI and he was shocked and said he won't be able to do it. My DD kept teasing him about it and he just got mad.... wow! I can't believe that we haven't even been there and here he is. I told him that this shot is worth $10,000 because that's how much our IVF is. You tell your DH that too and tell him this is for your own benefit. Glad to know that you hubby doesn't want to hurt you at any cost that's a relief. If you really cant and you are losing much Progesterone try and do it yourself, I know its hard I saw it on youtube and I was gagging and horrified....it was huge and so ever slow...... but we gotta do what we have to do. Take care and Good luck!!! Hang in there ! I wish you all the best.

Thanks....actually the PEO (ethyl oleate) doesn't hurt really. He darts it in really fast and this is the thinner oil so it really doesn't leave a knot longer than 24 hours. Plus you can use the smaller 25g needle....which is much much less scary

I don't know.....I might get him to give me a 1/2 a cc again tonight just to ease my fears, I just hate to think that the PEO went in the wrong spot and won't metabolise correctly.

Not sure if this is helpful, but last night something happened and about 3/4ths of the way through, the needle started filling up with blood and it began to hurt. DH was doing the shot in a low section, but I believe still in the targeted area. Anyway, we had to inject the remainder in the other cheek. The original injection site immediately began swelling and turned blue/black with bruising. I was so worried that the PEO would not be absorbed correctly that I called the nurse at almost 10 last night. She told me it will be fine and still will be absorbed, and it is fine as long as we completed the dosage. Not sure what happened in our situation. Nurse said that some of those blood vessels down there will bleed quite a lot. I am sure you are fine as long as the correct dosage was injected... but I am no expert!!

Keep in mind that a little more than planned is no problem. In other words, protocols usually have a minimum target blood level but no maximum.

New to this forum...and to IVF, I must admit that I am a bit wary of those PIO injections.

Giving the shot too low will not change the absorption of the medication. The reason the progesterone should be given in the upper outer quadrant is to avoid hitting and injuring the sciatic nerve. From what I understand, if you did hit it, you would have known immediately because of the pain, so it does not sound like that occurred. Otherwise, you should be fine.

Maybe think about giving them to yourself? I had to do many of mine on my own due to DH's work schedule and honestly it was never that bad - it got to me more mentally than anything else. And it's a little awkward to do with your non-dominant hand, but it might give you and DH some relief from the stress.

PS: If you do it yourself, I found it was much easier to stand on the foot opposite of the injection site and just hold onto something for balance. Maybe you could even do the inject part and he can just push the plunger.

I havent done the Progesterone injection yet but when I was doing IUI I had to give myself the hcg shot intramuscular and I didn't feel it cuz i was paying attention to what i was doing instead. just sit on the sink and turn around and do it

The nurse said it should be fine....and not to worry. I'm going to draw some HUGE circles though....so he can hit the mark without thinking about it too much.

I would do them myself but I'm so tired of giving myself all my own shots, I like this little break LOL

Plus I feel like he's got to have his hand in something....he kind of got his feelings hurt when I wouldn't let him do the stim shots, but I just felt more secure in doing them myself. Now I just draw up the PEO and lay everything out, he comes in...washes his hands, darts the shot in and voila...done LOL

One question though, did your RE tell you your P4 levels? My nurse said today when I asked that the lab doesn't send back the number, it just says above 20.....huh? Seems like they'd want to know if it was borderline or way up there?
