Hi all,
Just curious if anyone out there has done IVF with only having one ovary? We were on the path to do IVF due to male factor infertility when I had to have one ovary removed. I am doing my first IVF cycle in Sept and am concerned that they may not get enough eggs. I had an antral follicle count done this week which showed 7-8 follies in my remaining ovary. Doc says I can probably expect 5-6 eggs and hopefully a couple good embryos to implant. Hoping more follicles will be present with stims, but just a little nervous. If anyone has experience here, I'd love to hear!

I also only have one ovary and I was scared to death that my chances of getting pregnant were over. The first time I got to retrieval I only had 5 eggs, out of the 5 eggs I ended up with 2 embryos. My RE implanted both embryos. The IVF failed possibly due to fluid in my tubes, but still not sure why it happened. but the embryos looked really good. Anyway, at the first IVF we had no idea my right ovary was dead. My point is with only 5 eggs, I had 2 embryos. I haven't had much luck since, but the last attempt was cancelled due to high progestrone. So my RE and the other RE in the practice both said my chances are still good. It is the quality, not the quantity. I haven't had my happy ending yet, but my RE says there is hope so I have to go with that. Best of luck to you.

Just curious on what is your protocal? What meds are you taking? I started with estrace, then gonal f, and menopur.

Cemp- Thanks for the reply! I'm glad to hear that even though you only had 5 eggs retrieved, you still did end up with 2 good embryos. I read posts where people had 10 or 12 eggs retrieved and still only end up with 2 or 3 embryos, which makes me a little worried. I don't know about my protocol yet, I have my calendar review next Wednesday to find out all about that, I'll let you know!

My best friend only had one ovary, the other had to be removed because of horrible endometriosis and a tumor the size of a grapefruit. So, at the age of 31 she did one ivf cycle and they got 8 eggs, they ended up with three embryos and transfered all three but she miscarried at 8 weeks. She tried again a few months later, also got around 7 or 8 eggs, 3 embryos were transfered and she now has TRIPLETS!! They are five years old now.

I haven't had experience yet, but have been thinking about starting the same thread!! I had a Granulosa Cell tumor and my left ovary removed a few years ago.. I have questioned the drs, they say that the other side makes up for the lacking one. My Orientation appt is Sept 4th. Good luck!!

My cousin-in-law had one ovary removed due to cancer. Her chances of getting a natural BFP were almost 0%. Well, after her divorce (everything happened the same year), she met someone, went out shortly and ba-ba-boom..... got pregnant!! My niece is a beautiful 3 month-old baby. Miracles can happen!

Hi Diane! I have only 3/4 of an ovary left - if that. I have a history of dermoid cysts and had to have my right ovary removed at the age of 9. Since then I've had surgeries on my left ovary to remove dermoids. Three to be exact. I've had 2 IVFs done and am currently in the 2WW - had a frozen embryo transfer a week ago.

First IVF - retrieved 6 eggs, 5 fertilized - 3 transferred/none to freeze-

Second IVF - retrieved 8 eggs, 7 fertilized - 2 transferred/3 frozen -

Frozen Embryo Transfer - thawed all 3 embryos and transferred them - currently waiting for results but HPT showed a very faint just last night & this morning!!!! Keeping my fingers crossed!

I do hope I am a success story soon but this just goes to show that with less than one ovary you can have great cycles! I call my ovary "The litte ovary that could!"

It might take a little bit to get your protocols just right but it is well worth it. My very first IVF cycle got canceled 8 days in because my ovary was not responding. I've done the microflare protocol since and it has helped me get better results.

I have two ovaries and only the left side produced eggs.
It can work!

Yes it is very possible. I also only have approx. 3/4 of an ovary and just gave birth to a heatlhy but fussy baby boy a month ago. During my cycle I had an AFC of 8 but only produced 4 follicles of which only 2 had mature eggs that were both transferred.

Congratulations on your baby boy! Wow, you give me hope reading your information because I only have one ovary now. I think we wrote awhile ago back and forth, but I am curious what were the meds you took? I will be taking Gonal -f, Luveris and Ganirelix and maybe estrace to start. Just wondering if your protocol was similiar since you have 3/4 of an ovary. I like to hear about success stories. Thanks!

I'm also a one ovary gal. While my ivf response could be described "poor" at best, I am fortunate enough to have gotten pregnant on my own, right before starting another ivf!! Pregnancies do happen for us one ovary ladies!

Thank you for the good wishes ladies. My BETA is tomorrow and I can't wait! I'm still getting VERY faint positives...praying for a solid BETA tomorrow.

CEMP: I began on BCPs. Stopped BCPs and began 20 units of Lupron in the evening 3 days after stopping BCPs. I then continued with the Lupron (20 units) in the morning and in the evening for the remainder of my cycle (about 2 weeks). I added in Gonal-F (225) in the morning and Menopur (225) in the evening on the third day of starting with the Lupron. This is the cycle that helped me get my best results. I stimmed (Gonal-F/Menopur) for 14 days.
