What do they do with the eggs?

O.k. I have a question. This is going to be my first IVF. Say I produce a great amount of eggs that all fertilize. They put say 4 in me and one takes and I become pregnant.

When they freeze my eggs before they know if they took and I get pregnant. What happens to my frozen eggs?

Do they dispose of them, can you sell them, can you save them for a later pregnancy (years down the road)?

My RE had DH and I go through all the options and write down what we wanted if... (fill in the blank) before we did IVF. Will your office do the same thing? I'm pretty sure you'll be talking about embryos and not eggs, since they're going to try to fertilize all the eggs at the same time, right? Anyway, we had to write down what we wanted in all sorts of situations, like whether or not to freeze any embryos that were not transferred, what to do with the extra embryos if we got pregnant, if we froze extra embryos and I died, if we froze extras and DH died, if we froze extra embryos and DH and I divorced, if we decided not to freeze any extras (because it does cost money to freeze them and to store them), if we wanted to donate extras to research, to other couples at random, to a couple we designated, etc. I would ask your REs office about your options well ahead of time because it definitely brings up some interesting conversation between you and your partner! Good luck!

yes i would definitely make it known to them what you want...they can freeze them, my re's office charges 300/yr for storage..they would probably freeze the embryo's and not the eggs since i think the eggs still don't do as well with freezing as the embies...if you decide you don't want anymore children because you have gotten your positive you can have them donated etc depending on what you want and your re can do...the embies can last for years when frozen...so no hurry to decide!
lots of luck

Thanks ladies for all that info. My RE (Boston IVF) never went over anything, no forms nothings. In fact, they didn't even get a permission slip from me yet and I think have forgotten.

Well, I will be 41 so if I get pregnant, I think its gonna be my last.

Well, I will be 41 so if I get pregnant, I think its gonna be my last.

The laws are different in different states so what happens at my RE office in Michigan is this...

1. They take a bunch of eggs and fertilize them all.
2. They put a couple fresh ones (unfrozen) back in me a couple days later
3. They freeze the embryos that didn't go back in me
4. If I end up pregnant from the first transfer I can:
a. keep the embryos for a future pregnancy and pay a storage fee (can be used years down the road) or
b. go to the clinic and they will give me the vial with the embryos in it for me to dispose of them. They are dead by the time they give them to me but they will not be the ones to physically pour them down the sink. I have to take them home to dispose of them.
5. If you are 35 or older (at my clinic) you cannot donate your embryos to another potential mother. I do, however, believe I would be able to donate them to science.

It's crazy cuz when you go through all of this paperwork of your plan for the embryos, you will even have to choose a guardian for them in the event you and your husband die while you have some in storage. And you also have to say who will receive custody of them if you two were to divorce. It's very legal.

I hope that helps you. Good luck with your IVF.

We were given a form with each and every scenario. (death, divorce, donate) and both DH and I had to sign under each decision. I would def ask about it because you want to have in writing what they are doing with your frosties! Good Luck!
