1st IVF diagnosed with PCOS

Dear Ladies,
I am new to this site, and all of you and your support on other post threads have really given me some hope. I am going for my 1st IVF tomorrow and I was hoping you can give me some advice or tell me about your experience(s). I am a very nervous since this is the first time we (my husband and I) are doing something like this; and with everything that I have been through I don't know if I can do it a 2nd time if it doesn't work. I also have another maybe "stupid" question, how do you go through the 2ww period without thinking about "it". Can it really be done?

Thanks for all your help,
Margarete - 1st time IVF

It is not so much thinking about it... it is obsessing over it. I just tried to stay very busy... watching movies (5 days bed rest), working on my journal, visiting with friends, catching up on sleep... I was and still am tired...

Don't get too far ahead of yourself, thinking about a second time... just try to be positive. Try to visualize everything working, the embies attaching.... there is power to positive thinking.

Hi

hi there. I am new here too, and am suppose to start my stim drugs as of 6/1 for my first IVF. I am right there with you though... I am very nervous. I dont think we can go through a second one, but we will have to cross that bridge when we get to it.... as for the 2ww, I am still obsessing on whether I can go through this or not and how emotional it will be. Do you have a start date, or are you just throwing the idea around? I just wanted to say hello and tell you there are lots of women here who are very supportive. I found that out very early. Good luck to you...

Mihlya what are they going to do to treat or assist the IVF since you have PCOS? I have already done 2 rounds of IVf. And am awaiting to try one last time in July. After the second try they found out I was insulan resistant, and I have been on meds for that. They say that might be why my egg quality was so low. Do you know if they checked your levels?

Smile Thanks Ladies for your responses

Hi Ladies,

it's Mihlya here, and this is why I am a little bit nervous about the 2ww. You see the Dr's hyperstimulated me so that I would produce a lot of eggs. And boy did I ever, I had 18 eggs. They said of those 18, 17 were good. And out of 17, 15 matured. Now out of 15, there were 6 that were classified as a 2 and a 3 which means very good, and good. The higher the number the worse the egg quality. So a 2 and 3 is pretty good, it usually goes from a 1-5. Any way’s getting back on track, the remaining 9 eggs were still at a pre-stage, not the blastocyst stage, which is where they would want the egg to be for a transfer. The day of my transfer they told me that I went from 15 good eggs to just 1 really good one, and a second "ok" one. So, they put both of them in. Now I am on the 2ww period, and i don't know how I am going to get through the next week. JJPRAYINGHARD to your question about what did they give me to treat my PCOS, they gave me Purigon, but I don't think it's to deal with my PCOS, but intended more to hyperstimulate me. About the egg levels, they checked that everyday when i went for an ultrasound.

Thanks ladies for all of your well wishes and support, and good luck to all of you as well.
Mihlya

Mihayla.

PCOS is generally the result of insulin resistance... you probably already know that though... the reason I say that is that there is a book called Insulin Resistance Diet... it helps with food pairing... see if you can get a copy from the library. I bought it because it is a great reference... about 12 or 14 dollars. Also, to treat my PCOS my RE gives me 500 mg Metformin (Glucophage) 2 X's/day. Don't know if it helps or not...

Did they say if they are going to let the embies continue to develop? Were you able to freeze any? We didn't have enough to freeze, so I started panicking... but I got the BFP, I know you will too... just relax and enjoy the ride!

Yvonne,

No, i didn't know that PCOS is the result of insulin resistance, but i will go to the library and see if I can get a copy of the book.
However, I didn't have any good embros left to freeze, so I am just praying that these two that they insurted will work...But I am just trying to relax and take it one day at a time.
Good luck to you as well; just have to keep thinking positive thoughts, and it will all workout when it is suppose to.

Mihlya,

Ok, since you are probably still on bedrest/taking it easy... I will try to give you a once over of the book... (maybe DH or a friend can pick it up for you or you can look it up on Amazon) when you are fixing your meals this is the thought you want to keep going...

Protein should be equal or greater than the carbs at all times... lean meats are better than red meat or pork. You can eat as much veggies however veggies does not fill in for protein, etc...

Good sources of protein are meat, fish, nuts, beans, peanut butter, cheese, cottage cheese, eggs (if you can get free range-then there is alot less cholesterol in them), etc...

I have actually found that when I am naucious protein helps to take the edge off and often takes it away completely.

Once you start eating like this, it is easy... you just always divide your plate and try to make sure the protein side is more than the non protein! I still have a sweet now and again, but I try to not take much carbs at all during my meal to count the sugar from a piece of cake or something as my carbs.

The nice thing is that it doesn't say you can't have ANY of ANYTHING!!

I did 2 rounds of IVF. After the 2nd BFN they "finally" tested my insulin. They said i was Insulan resistant as Yvonne said. They told me that could be the reason my embryo quality was poor. Like you I had 17 eggs, and only 1 grade two to transfer. The first time 12 eggs, and they transfered 3 grage 3's, not soo good! I have been on metaformin for about 3 months, and await seeing a specialist in Chicago. They say the metaformin will help egg quality. Not sure if it works, but I really am trying. You may want to ask them to check your insalin
