CDC and Stats, how do you feel?

Hi again,

So I was looking over Stats for a clinic in Chicago and it was like 70% success rates and the one I am at is like 40%. This was 2003, but still, do you guys take this into consideration when you choose your clinic? I found another one that has better success rates, do I change again before this cycle is over? I can't decide? How did you guys pick yours?

Thanks....again!

I think success rates should definitely be considered but you must know that as the years have passed medical technology has only improved. CDC is always at least two years behind in posting their statistics. A few things that I looked into before choosing my RE. #1 recommendations, #2 success rates, #3 he's a christian (this may mean nothing to some and lots to another), #4 his medical staff had to be friendly and patient, #5 initial insurance coverage (until I switched employers), #6 convenient location and office hours, etc. It's your money and you want to trust that it's not going to waste because of improper technique or lack of knowledge. Look at your options.

Thanks, I will ask him for his current stats...I hope they are much better than just 40%. And your right, I do have to consider a lot before just going at this again.

HOw are you feeling????

My Re's Stats Were Last Stated Around 50%. My Ob Warned Me About Some Clinics With High Sucess Rates Vs. Multiples. I Chose My Re Because Of All The Top Doc Awards, Etc And I Liked The Fact That He Used Art Guidelines As Far As Number Of Embryos To Transfer.
(2 Unless Over 35, Then 3) Also, I Live Far Away From Any Ivf Clinic, And He Was Established With A Womens Clinic That Could Do My Cycle Monitoring Closer To Home. I Have Had People Ask Me "why Not Lubbock Instead Of Dallas? It's Closer...." To Me 4 1/2 Hours Away Is Not Much Better Than 6...and I Decided When It Was Their 10 Grand Then They Could Choose For Me!! Lol!!!!!!!!!!!

I did. I called all of the RE's in my general area and had them fax me their stats. I chose the one with the highest number of pregnancies for my age.

When I picked my first RE, I hadn't checked stats but he was affiliated with the best hospital here in STL. After a couple of weeks with him, I just wasn't comfortable so I called the few people I knew here who had done IF treatment and asked who they used. I also checked the current stats for the RE's I was choosing between. They had similar stats so I checked with the women at a local IF support group here and it seemed like more women over 35 with high FSH had gone to my current RE so I picked him since those were my issues.

Good luck. I do think finding the best RE is absolutely critical to success.

Ive heard it's important that they are board certified as well, so that's something I looked for. Pregnancy rate is a good indicator, but you need to make sure they differentiate between the donor egg program and regular stats. Also - some doctors purposely turn away challenging or difficult cases to boost their stats. This, in turm, gives them good pregnancy stats but doesn't necessarily mean they are all that talented with complicated infertility issues.
