Question Egg Retrieval Recovery Time

Hi!

So, I had my egg retrieval 2 days ago and am still feeling the pain. I was under the impression (from one of the nurses) that I would be able to "resume normal activity" the next day...NOT! I feel like I've been punched in the stomach numerous times. How long will this last? Have others taken days to recover from ER?? Thanks in advance for everyone's help!

--PixxiDusst

Me - 32, normal
DH - 43, abnormal morphology

First IVF cycle:
7/11 - ER - 16 eggs!
7/12 - 9 fertilized!

Each person is different and I honestly think it has to do with the number of eggs you get. I was back to normal activities the day of my ER except that my doctor/nurse advised that I not lay down flat at all. So I had to sit in my recliner all day and night which meant I got very little sleep. I was up making breakfast the next morning and got in trouble by DH who was sleeping on the couch. I would say I did have a bit of bloating that lasted about three days but my pain wasn't bad at all. Be sure to take the perscriptions they gave you. They will help you heal, even if you aren't in pain. That was another bit of advice I got from the nurse.

Thanks, Jen. Maybe I've been lying down too much. My doctor didn't tell me anything about sitting in a recliner, nor was I given an prescriptions for pain. Just been taking Tylenol :-( I'll call the nurse later if things haven't gotten better.

Hi PixxiDusst~~~ I too felt terrible after my ER. For me I was in pain until the day of my ET (day 3). In the evenings I could get up to take a shower but that was about it. I hope you start to feel better soon!!

Me too! I was feeling like poo after ER too. My tummy felt sore and I was just achy. It only lasted a few days and then I was fine. Wishing you the best of luck.

I think ER is the toughest part of the whole IVF process....I actually went back to work after my two days of rest...but I certainly didn't feel 100%....hang in there

I was sore and bloated for three days and the morning of my ET (day three transfer) felt better. My bloating had gown down and I had much less cramping. Then after the ET I had bloating on and off with weird twinges and cramps. Good luck and hope you feel better soon!

Heart

The ER was really the hardest part for me. I was off work for 2 days after the retrieval and it took 4 days or so for me to feel better, not normal, just better...
I was also in a very high risk to get OHSS so I had to be VERY careful, not to walk or move too much, not to lift heavy things and eat very specific things, only crackers with cheese and chicken broth with noodles. NO sugars and white flour. I mainly had to have things that have a lot of salt and drink lots of V8 and Gatorade. I guess the salt helps getting read of all the liquid in the stomach and it really helped me to feel much better and I didn't get OHSS... After the 4th day I started feeling better and at the 5th I had my ET but that was a wonderful experience.

Take it easy and rest... I hope you feel better soon!

I just read your post and am befuddled!!! I have been eating Halloween candy, does sugar irritate the healing process after an ER? oops

Why did they suggest just chicken broth, crackers and cheese, out of curiosity?

Thank you so much for your post!! I had gotten upset at my husband for suggesting the candy wasn't helping with the bloating but it seems he may have been right...

For both my IVF's I was feeling crappy the day of and the day after my ER. By the 3rd day I felt more like me.
I was very sore, like I had done 1 million crunches and very bloated and gassy.

I am now 1dp3dt and I feel just fine!!! Totally back to me!

FEEL BETTER!

I don't know about the salt either. Makes no sense to me because salt causes water retention. I wasn't told to eat any particular way, nor was I told not to lay down as someone else posted. The only thing I was told was if the pain wasn't relieved by tylenol, I could call for a prescription for pain meds. I wasn't completely discomfort-free until about a week later. Good luck!

I too had 16 eggs retrieved, but at least 20 follies so I was sore for 3-4 days. I was not sore for my 5 day transfer. I highly recomend heat... that helped me a lot, and walking around for little bits of time, it helped calm things down lol.
