Magnesium supplementation during pregnancy

I just went to my first OB appointment yesterday and I was given a folder with several handouts in it, one of which talks about the importance of increasing your calcium intake during pregnancy. On this same form it warns not to take a calcium supplement with additional Vitamin D or Magnesium. Everything I could find online indicated that extra magnesium during pregnancy was good. Since we began our cycle I have been drinking Smart Water, which is water enhanced with electrolytes (it had potassium, calcium, and magnesium). I thought it was a good thing since I've been vomiting quite a bit due to ms. Anyone know why we should avoid extra supplements of magnesium and vitamin D?

Never heard this. The Dr. Barbara Luke multiples book recommends NINE calc-mag-zinc tablets a day (for twins). I talked to my OB and we modified it to six.

My Ob knows that I am taking calcium w/vitamin D to help reduce the risk of preeclampsia. Also my accupuncturest recommended mag to reduce constipation & BH. When I mentioned it to my OB he said 'go for it - it just may give you diareah as with milk of mag... I never did start taking it... but now that I have been having more BH I am considering it.

Talk to your Dr... BOL

I just talked to my nurse, and she says she has no idea why that hand out says that, but she will find out and call me back later. Weird!
