Bottle Confusion

WE started the registry process yesterday and were doing pretty good until we got to the bottle section. I swear BRU has an entire wall of different bottle choices. It's pretty crazy. Any recommendations?

We were leaning towards the Playtex Drop-ins or Dr. Browns BPA free plastic. THoughts on these (or others you like)? according to reviews, people like the Dr. Browns but say they are a pain to clean. I also haven't seen many reviews specific to the BPA free version - are those as good as the older kind?

I assume I want around a 4 ounce for a newborn? Do I need extra nipples (and why?).

I am planning on breastfeeding if that matters, but will pump for work and for my husband to do some feedings.

Thanks!

Well according to a news segment I saw a little while ago said that they dont think there is enough BPA in any of the bottles to cause any harm, but we still opted to get the playtex drop ins, not only do they seem easier to me but I have also read that it helps reduce on nipple confusion when breastfeeding if you get the latex nipples I believe. Dr. Browns were our next option but they are more expensive it seems and more work to clean and I figure the less we have to do the better. And we got extra nipples but only a package or two. Oh and there is a website where you can go to get a free playtex drop in bottle, we did it and had friends and family order one too, its a 5 dollar bottle for free, so its worth a try. But I agree BRU has every kind of bottle they make I think! Anyhoo good luck with your decision and here is that link for the free bottle:

Playtex BPA Free Information

Oh and we registered for the playtex nurser starter set and a couple of the 4 ouncers just in case we needed more, and the free bottle we got was the 8 oz.

I was originally going to go with Dr. Brown's but then I found out about the whole BPA thing and it was before Dr. Brown's came out with their BPA-free ones. I read the reveiws on the Sassy MAM bottles at Targer.com and was impressed with them. Unfortunately, Target only sells them online.. likewise with Wal-Mart. When I went to register at BRU, I saw them in the store! They are BPA free and only 3 peices (bottle, cap, and nipple) so they should be easy enough to clean. A lot of the reviews said they cause the least amount of nipple confusion of the different bottles the reviewers tried, including Dr. Brown's. I vaguely recall seeing them at Target when I was there last, but I'm not sure. I do know that they sell them at Publix though.

I use Born Free which are PBA free. I have both glass and plastic. The plastic are easier to read the measurement lines and lighter to hold. I bought the 9oz size so that I do not have to buy new bottles once the babies begin to eat more. So far I really like these bottles. The bottles come with a slow flow nipple for newborns. I ordered some faster flow nipples for when they get a bit bigger. The only down side of the Born Free bottles is that they are expensive and I needed 30 of them!

we have the Dr Browns bottles, and they are doing great.

we had to buy different nipples, after Aedyn was in the NICU and they used the laytex nipples, we had to buy more of those and replace all the silicon nipples, she didn't take to those at all. I am hoping she will adapt to them a little later, because we have quite a few of them.

I have the Sassy Mam's bottles and really like them. They are BPA-free and had great reviews. I got them from Target.com - the price was pretty good - 10.99 for 3 bottles. I got the 6 oz bottles which I would highly suggest. I think you'd find 4 oz to be too small after a bit. As for how many parts to them - there are 6 parts (including the cap) - the very bottom, a rubbery insert that goes into the bottom, the mid-section, the piece that screws in to the mid-section, the nipple and the cap. Even thought that seems to be a lot, it really isn't bad at all, even to clean.

We are still using them - 6 months later.

Good luck!

Thanks for correcting my mistake about the number of pieces. I bought some from BRU yesterday, but I haven't opened them and really looked at them yet.

I didn't see 6oz ones.. they only had 5oz and I think 8oz.. I got some of both. The ones from BRU were a little more expensive than the ones you got from Target.com.. $12.99 for 3.

I haven't tried them (yet) but Ive been researching and Ive heard and read lots of good things about the playtex drop ins for nursing moms. I hear their nipples are less likely to cause nipple confusion and that you can freeze breastmilk right into the drop ins bags so you won't have to transfer any milk when you pump - which is nice. The bag collapses which works the same way the Dr Browns bottles do to eliminate gas & bubbles & the Drop ins are much less expensive and easier to deal with = no parts and pieces to wash.

Yes, I plan to do a 4oz in the beginning and then move up to the 8 oz. You will need extra nipples b/c as you boil them several times they will kind of start to crack and fall apart.

You're right, they are 5 oz, but if you fill it up, it'll hold 6 oz. They may have gone up in price or I may not remember correctly!

I've used the playtex drop ins since my child weeks old because I had to supplement her with formula. She never got nipple confused, and she could BF and take the bottles without any problems.
