need help w/ my fetal doppler

i just got my fetal doppler yesterday and thought i found the heartbeat, but the two times i counted the heart rate, i was getting pretty low numbers, like 114. (and this was more of a woo woo woo woo sound....not galloping hoofbeats like the manual says) someone said i was probably hearing the fetal blood flow and not the heartbeat. does that mean it's too early to hear the heartbeat or i just wasn't listening in the right place? any tips or suggestions? is hearing the fetal blood flow a good sign?

I started using my doppler around 11w. If you have trouble finding the hb it can help to try again later after a snack. Also, in the early days I had more luck finding the hb low on the abdomen and a bit to the left. But, that was just me. As your LO grows the hb will get louder but a whosh whosh sound is good. Good luck!

Mine never sounded like a galloping horse, more just the woo woo, or whoosh whoosh. I had a doppler that counted the heartbeat for you. Initially I had to check really low to find them. My manual says to keep the doppler pointed towards your feet. It also helped early on to have a full bladder. Good luck!

Im an L+D nurse and if it was a woosh woosh you may have been hearing placenta. Babys HB sounds a bit higher pitched than the woosh woosh. Lay on your back and look right over your pubic bone. Good luck. Does yours use gel??

Also another trick to figure out whether you are hearing the baby or just your own heart beat, take your pulse at the same you are hearing the woosh woosh and if it's at the same time as your heart beat then you are just hearing yours. I heard mine at 11 weeks real low and center. Good luck!

Hb

Look right above your hairline and stay right around that area and you will find it. It isn't the woosh-woosh sound, once you find it you'll know.

It took me forever to finally find mine.

Can someone tell me which doppler is good? I'd like to order one but am not sure which to buy. I bought a prenatal listener but that picks up every sound around you!

thanks ya'll! i found it! i just wasn't looking hard enough. lol! everything was fine

hazel, i rented mine from babybeat.com. i think i rented the one that is $27/mo. it doesn't have a display or a recorder, but it wasn't the lowest model, it was the second to lowest model. however, they sent me one that records. i doubt i'll ever use that feature. they ship from colorado. i rented on a friday and got it on a tuesday (in texas). i was pleased w/ the their service and the product.

So glad you found your little one's hb and thanks for the info. I just ordered one on ebay for $85 with a screen and gel and also records so I guess it's similar to yours.

Hazel - I did what you did. Not sure what one you got, but I ended up getting the Sonotrax B, which has all those features. There was a problem with the probe on mine, so I had to send the probe back to the seller for a replacement (it was supposed to be 3MHz, but was only 2MHz). Hopefully I'll be getting the new one soon. I tried to find the h/b with it at 11w, and had a really hard time. I'll be in my 13th week when I get the new probe, so we'll see what happens then! lol

Interesting, I think I ordered the 3 mgh so I'll make sure to double check. Let me know how it goes when you get the new probe.

I got the replacement probe in the mail yesterday (13 weeks, 1 day), and it was registering as 3MHz as it should. We were able to find the baby pretty quickly - a little above my hairline with the probe angled downward, not up toward my belly. I wish I had a properly functioning probe earlier in my pregnancy, because I'm curious to know if I could have found it at 10-12 weeks as easily, but oh well. I have it now, and that's all that matters
