anyone starting to freak about H1N1?

so i'm a teacher at a middle school. we had a TON of kids out today and then the nurse said she sent 15 home with a fever of over 100 degrees. it's here, the swine flu has apparently hit central PA. great. i'm not normally a germ-a-phobe, but being pregnant has given me OCD. all i want to do is clean my classroom and my house, leave the windows open (brrrrrr) and just stay away from people in general. my ob really encourages the vaccine, which i'm all for, but do you think they have it? nope....no body around here has it yet! so frustrating and scary! i know i just need to relax and trust that we've gotten this far and everything is going to be okay, but it's hard.

anyone else a teacher? what does your doctor suggest? has it hit your school yet? i'm pretty sure that a few of my students have had it. problem is they're not being tested unless it lands them in the hospital. what ever these kids are getting though is bad, they're out for DAYS! i did get the regular flu shot and read a study found that that will help a little bit against the swine flu, so hopefully that's all i need. it's going to be a long winter!

sorry, just needed to vent my freaking out!

I'm totally freaking out! I am not a teacher, but a couple weeks ago about 15 of my husbands co-workers had it. Some of them I had been in contact with. My ob put me on tamiflu for 10 days. Maybe you should ask your ob about that? Just hearing all the horror stories is scary. I try to keep in mind, 99% of people who get the swine flu are only mildly sick (even pregnant women) and some don't even know they have it. However, I will be the first one at my docs office when the vaccine comes in...hopefully soon!!!!

I'm usually not one to worry about germs, but I think all the unknowns with H1N1 and also the fact that I will be in my 3rd trimester during the height of the flu season had me on edge. I don't work in a school, but in a museum, so lots of kids around. I'm getting a little OCD with my Purell after being out of my office area.

I was fortunate enough to get an H1N1 shot last week. My OB's office got 20 shots and the nurse told me I got the last one and that was by 9:30 AM the day they started giving them. I don't understand why they aren't able to get more of them since us pregnant ladies are such a top priority and we can only get the shot. Even so, I'm still not immune for another 10 days so I still worry a little bit. When I heard we'd be getting the first shots in my state last week I called my OB office and they said they were scheduled to get them, but wouldn't until later that week. She told me to call back on Thursday, which I did first thing, and they got me in for my shot. Don't just wait to ask at your appointment because likely if they get any they will go quickly...like within 90 minutes, it seems.

Im in TN and the flu has been bad here since the beginning of August. All kinds of schools have been closed around here. Im a nurse so theres no way escaping sick people. I just wash my hands a lot and I wear a mask if they have a fever over 100. They gave out the vaccine at my hospital friday so I got it. But so far Ive been around people with it for 2 months and Ive been OK, knock on wood.

Asking about Tamiflu is a good idea I dont know what pregnancy catagory it is. Im betting C so you have to weight your risks versus benefits.

If you start feeling bad thats when you definately need to ask for Tamiflu. You have to start it within 48 hours of symptoms. Hopefully you will get your vaccine soon

I'm not pregnant anymore, but I'm a little freaked out having an infant and I normally don't worry about these type of things.

My sister (nurse) watched Brenna last Monday (8 days ago) and she found out she had H1N1 the next day - it hit hard and fast. Luckily Brenna didn't catch it from her but I was terrified all last week. We don't have any shots in my town and she's too young for the mist. I can't even get a seasonal flu shot for her as we are out of those. The only thing I'm hoping for is that the BF will continue to protect her and that her daycare is very small. She only has around 6 students in her infant classroom.

tamiflu scares the crap out of me. at this point i am going to have to take my chances. my pcp does not have the h1n1 vaccine yet and they are saying it will be another 3-4 weeks (I will probably deliver by then) and my ob's office was nice enough not to tell me they might get the shot, which they did get 100 does, and i was not on the list so i did not get a called. a bit miffed about that since i am carrying twins and in my last trimester. idiots.

The H1N1 scares the heck out of me too ~ 28% of the patients that have died with H1N1 were pregnant women. I am so scared to get the shot, but will because it is what the doctors I trust say to do...... SCARED!

I asked my doctor yesterday....she said wash your hands.....DUH. they don't have the shot yet and it didn't seem like they're going to call me or anything when they do get it. Does anyone know if taking Airborne is possible when pregnant? I don't know if it would help. But, I was reading today that 80% of the people who are sick right now don't even have any type of flu - it's other stuff they're catching. Everyone is just calling it the flu because no one is offically testing them anymore.

I AM NOW! My youngest was just diagnosed with it yesterday!! I thought that keeping both him and myself away from sick people, certain peoples houses and at least keeping him away from stores (and dirty carts) BUT that wasn't our case, he got sick anyways. We haven't been out of the house in a few days so I am dumbfounded on where he picked it up from. The doctor swabbed his nose and came back 5 minutes later and told us the news. I really thought he was kidding. And then proceeded to tell me that I needed to call my OB as soon as I left their office. I was in shock. I have seen in all over the news and never thought that it was going to happen to my little one. He can't even get the vaccines for either flu because of the vaccine scare we had last November that sent him to the hospital. The gelitan and/or neomyicin that are made in both flu shots is what he can't receive. His immune system is so much lower than me or my older son's. I feel so bad for him right now. With swollen little eyes, runny nose, sneezing and fluctuating temperature...he looks like a mess.
I am planning on getting my other shot on Monday when I go into the OB's office. So hopefully with the both of us on meds, it won't get out of control. NOW, my hubby is showing signs and he will be off to the doctor this morning!!!
Take care everyone and stay healty!!!

Trisha ~ get a PX for tamaflu ASAP so you can take it at any signs of you getting it, it could be fatal and you don't want to take any chances.

The H1N1 is full force here in New Mexico, so my guess is that it's in Texas or it will be there soon! We don't have the shot yet, but we do have the swabs for the kids, however if you are pregnant you have to stay away from the swabs because it contains the live virus. So if we get our kids the swab, I have to send them some where for 48 hours per our docs.

It is scary to get the shot, but in my opinion more scary not to. Last week I drove two hours to my hometown to get the H1N1 shot for me and my 18 month old because they still do not have it where I live. However, they gave all they had in one day, and now don't know when they will get anymore. Who knows if I will even be able to get my son the booster when the time comes. BTW, I live in Oklahoma.

very scary, i was in the supermarket today and there was a child picking up and putting down open apples, i decided not to tell the adult about this but stayed away big time.

got a call from my cousin who goes to the same ob as me, they got the thermasol free h1n1 shot in, i flew over there because they were unsure if they would get the mercury free shot again, i'm sure it will be all gone by tonight. they said they sent out an email but i didn't get it.

shew, i am relieved and feel good.
