There are a couple of kinds of cervical ripeners...Cervadil, prostaglandin gel, and the misoprostol (sp?) tablet are the most common. I was given the prostaglandin gel the night before. I was about 70% thinned and 10 days overdue. I was not dilated at all. The gel did squat. I was given the tablet intravaginaly the next morning. It started CRAZY strong contractions quickly but it didn't help dilate me. My water broke about 3pm that afternoon moments before they were about to discharge me for lack of progress. I was given some morphine later that night for the strong contractions but I wasn't dilating at all. The next morning pitocin was started and I was given an epidural. The doctor had to manually dilate me after the epidural was in (I had never heard of such a thing). For most of that day I did not dilate much despite the pitocin. Finally, out of nowhere everything started to work and 31 hrs after my water broke, I delivered my little girl vaginally. Didn't think it was ever going to happen (and BOY!, did I ask for a c-section many times that day when I wasn't progressing), but it did finally work.
I know you didn't ask for whole birth stories, but so much happened during those couple of days after I started the induction process that I didn't expect or even know could happen. I just wanted to pass along some of the things I learned. 1. ask questions until you understand the answer 2. be flexible 3. trust and lean on your DH or DP. I hope your induction goes quickly and smoothly and there aren't any surprises along the way ![]() Good luck!!

Oh geez, I'm sorry...I didn't mean for my message to come across like everything was horrible. And I really didn't want to post anything that might scare you. I only wanted to say that sometimes things don't go as planned, but that doesn't mean disaster
Just be flexible and in the end nothing else will matter except that your little one is here with you.

I was induced at 37 weeks and given cervidil inthe evening. I was not dilated prior to this. All I know is that it was very painful process to insert the cervidil. ow. The contractions were tough, but I think that's par for the course. I was given pitocin the next day and my labor after that was 7 hrs. Not bad. I really didn't dilate quickly until the ob broke my water during an exam. Then it went quickly. good luck to you! Hope everyting goes smoothly.

I didn't have cervidil, but I did have a pitocin induction at 41 weeks due to extremely low fluid. Prior to my induction I was already dialated to 2 cm and 50% effaced.
I was direct admitted to L&D about 3:45 pm, they started the pit and broke my water bag (GRRR.. really didn't want that) at 4, walked the halls unmediated and MISERABLE for 5 hours... with no progress, got the epidural about 9:30, still had little to no relief, but now trapped in bed.... but 4 hours later..... AUSTIN!!!! So in total it was just about 9 1/2 hours. Now prior to being induced I had not had a single contraction, so I guess my whole labor was pretty short considering. All totally worth it!! Good luck and congrats on being a very soon to be mommy!!!!

I was induced at 42 wks. I had patocin and cervadil. Cervadil is what made my contraction start. but they had to take it out because my contraction where right on top of each other and really strong. They told me that, that hardly ever happens. I had it in for about 3 hours. And within those 3 hours I dialated from a 0 to 4. So it did its job. I was in labor for 13 hours.
