Question Is pedicure safe during pregnancy?

Hi ladies,

I am going to be seventeen weeks soon. I was on total bed rest for last couple of months due to marginal placenta previa. But now fortunately the placenta has moved up. I just wanted to unwind a little bit so thought would visit a salon for a pedicure and manicure. However, i remember reading somewhere that pedicure during pregnancy is not safe. Does anyone of the pregnant ladies out here have gone for it or is it best to avoid. All thoughts and opinions are welcome. Thanks.

Yes it is safe. I was told by my OB to make sure the water is not as hot but warm. The hot water could cause swelling. And also not to massge so deeply because certain pressure points could cause contractions. Nothing too harmful where it would cause preterm labor but just more frequent contractions. As far as the fumes, it is safe to breath and won't hurt the baby or you. It just gave me a headache but nothing tylenol couldn't handle. If you are concerned, call your OB and see what they think. Have fun and enjoy! That sounds really relaxing right now!

I went for pedicures pretty regularly towards the end of my pregnancy. I never had any problems. I agree with Tricia though... make sure the water is not too hot. I did have the water a bit too warm the last time and noticed my feel were a bit swelled... this was also the day before I was scheduled to go into the hospital too. I never noticed an increase in contractions, but I was having them regularly at that time. It was a wonderful, wonderful treat for me to get pedicures... and I would say go for it!!!!!

I had the same question. I'm only 9 1/2 weeks preg. But I go for pedi's regularly (about every 4 weeks). So this was one of my first questions following my BFP.

My RE said it was fine. She provided the same advice -- water not too hot, no deep massage, etc. I've had 2 pedi's since my BFP. The salon I go to is WONDERFUL. They are gentle & have me check water temp before they fill the tub. They also try to give me the chair closest to the entrance which is further away from the manicure tables (where all the chemicals & smells linger). I also know many other women who had pedi's during their preg. One of which went thru IVF w/ DS & IUI w/ DD. Nobody reported having any problems. They all carried to term & had happy healthy babies.

She also said that a body massage was permitted in the 2nd trimester. Obviously, you want to use someone who is familiar with the do's & don'ts of preg massage, appropriately licensed, reputable, etc. So, I'm going to hang on until week 14 & then day spa HERE I COME!!!

FYI -- it is safe to get hair highlighted or colored during preg. No research to substantiate birth defects related to hair color treatment.
So, be relaxed, be beautiful & be all at once!!! Hope this helps!

Thanks Tricia and Angel for your replies. I will heed to your advice. Actually i want it badly for one more reason that clipping my toe nails now is becoming difficult as i would have to bend or put my leg up in doing so. Thanks ladies. Really appreciated.

Thanks Nic! That was pretty comforting to hear. I am really waiting to be transformed now as i have been on bed for long. But to think of pros and cons is important. I loved your quote "Be relaxed, be beautiful and be pregnant all at once."

Have a great time. It sounds like you could use some pampering. I'm glad to hear all is getting better with your placenta. Hugs!

Evita, I normally get pedicures regularly throughout the summer months but after my BFP I stopped, more to save a little money then anything. But I'm with you, painting and clipping my nails is starting to get a bit more difficult so I'd rather let someone else do it for me. I do plan on getting a pedicure in February, probably the last before the baby is born. Hope you enjoy it!

I hope it is safe..I jsut had a pedicure on Sat. for my big day! I didn't even think twice about it really. My feet are already so swollen, so I did not notice a difference there. She did not turn the massage on in the chair for me...she said it may aggrevate something. But, it was soooo worth it!!! My dh thought so too....now he doesn't have to paint my toes!!!

I had a very scary infection once from a pedicure. And even though I know that they are safe during pregnancy, it's scary to think of any type of infection right now. So, I ended up buying this pedicure kit, the SOS something, and I feel so much better about getting the pedicures. I hate to miss out on this little treat, especially since my feet are killing me!!

Oh, it's called Sole Savior, check it out -

I'm glad someone asked this question. I last painted my toenails at 22 weeks pregnant and could barely reach, so I know its hopeless now! I can't stand having them bare (even in the winter) so I need a pedi!

I wanted a pedicure in my 9 month, and thought I had lots of time. However, my water broke before I ever had the chance, and the whole time I was in labor DH reminds me that I just kept saying that I never had a chance to get my pedicure. So, I say go for it ladies!
