This is the "definition."

In about 1% of identical twins the splitting occurs late enough to result in both a shared placenta and a shared sac called; monochorionic, monoamniotic ("mono/mono") twins. Many times, monoamniotic twins are delivered at 32 weeks electively for the safety of the babies. In higher order multiples, there can sometimes be a combination of fraternal/identical twins.

I would not be worried. One sac is holding identical twins. My Mom is an identical twin and she shared one sac with her sister and they were both born healthy and they are now 50 years old Congrats on the pregnancy and my God Bless you and your babies!!!

My friend had a 5 day transfer of 2 blasts and is having triplets. I hear it's not uncommon for a split to occur. You have an instant family! Congrats.

danyel- It's called monozygotic twinning and can be common after assisted hatching. You have a set of identical twins and one singleton!!! Congrats!

We trasferred 4 embies three weeks ago and did assisted hatching with two of them. So I am waiting myself to see how many are in there!

Hi, Danyel!!
First, congrats on the successful pregnancy - triplets, wow!! Not sure what I would do.

I want to share the information I have about monoamniotic twins. I don't want to scare you, but I do want to just give the info I have. One of our best friends was recently pregnant with monoamniotic twins - naturally. At about 10 weeks, she had an appt with a perinatologist/specialist in Denver. They had this appt cuz of a scare with potential Downs diagnosis from ob/gyn. So, at this appt, the specialist did diagnose that her twins were not Downs, but were monoamniotic - in one sac, with no membrane separating them.
They were told that at about 24 weeks, she would be hospitalized for daily monitoring of the twins for fear of cord entanglement or cord compression. and could possibly have emergency delivery at any time. Most likely before 32 weeks.
Unfortunately, she did lose the twins at 15 weeks. Thankfully, their faith has kept them strong.

I tell you this just so you can make sure to get as much information as soon as you can. I think that there is a chance that even though they are in the same sac, that there is a membrane separating them which would be the ideal situation. My friend told me that it depends on what day they split that determines if they are in more than one sac or share placenta or have separate everything.

I hope it was okay to share this story - I know it did not have a happy ending. But for me, the more information the better. I am certain your care team will be on top of everything and provide you with the absolute best direction to lead to a healthy pregnancy and safe delivery of all three beautiful babies!!

Blessings to your family!!

Thumbs up hospital

Therewere two situations similar to this the three months I was in the hospital. One not so good, and the other fine, but early, 32 weeks I think.

The key is.... make sure you have a good perinatologist/specialist, and get a referral from your RE or your OBGYN ASAP. They R better trained at this kind of monitoring needed for a high risk pregnancy.
Congrats, and keep us posted, I would probably be prepared for bedrest by 24-25 weeks. Thats how long I was on for too, I was in the hospital for 3 months as crazy as it sounds!
Enjoy your new gift! or I should say GIFTS!!!!!!!!!!!

Did the two babies sharing the same sac also have two yolks, within that sac?

I just lost my identical twins. The first two ultrasounds appeard to be just a singleton. Then on my third ultrasound we found that the yolk had split....and it looked like they were both in the same sac.

I did lots of research and on all the types of identical twins and when the embryo can split. I was pretty sure that I had "momo" twins...the most dangerous kind. They have like a 50-60% mortality rate...since they are sharing the same living space and there is a high risk of cord entanglement, twin to twin transfusion, and a higher rate that they could be siamese twins.

But an interesting article I read said that if you see 2 yolks in the same sac that it's almost gauranteed that they ARE seperated by a thin membrane. It said that true momo twins are actually pretty rare. That in most cases they are seperated...even if it's difficult for the dr. to see. The best way to tell is pretty early on...like 8-10 weeks...when it might be easier to see the two yolk sacs.

Your dr. will keep a close eye on you and your little ones, so try not to worry.

I just watched a "special delivery" of momo twins on TLC and they both came out healthy and happy. The mom just had to be closely monitored in the hospital and they came a little early...but it was well worth it in the end.

I'm sure your babies will be just fine.

Congradualtions on your 3 little ones!!!
