Question Question about Nuchal Translucency Screening (NT)

Hi ladies,

For those of you who had your NT screening, what can be expected? I have mine on 12/27. I was told over the phone that it would be about 2 1/2 hours, blood would be drawn, and an ultrasound would be performed to detect Down's Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. I'm nervous about this even though I know there's no good reason to be!! Would love to hear your experiences on this...thank you as always! Lea

i was nervous before the screening, which is normal - but the actual procedure was really enjoyable for me. you get to see your baby move around a lot. the doctor will push on your stomach to try and make the baby turn so they can see the back of his/her neck. i know some people have had frustrating experiences because the baby didn't cooperate, but in my case, i got to see the baby do a complete roll-over and suck his thumb. normally they will tell you right away what the neck measurement is (they are looking at the thickness of the back of the neck - down's babies have fluid build-up back there which makes the neck thicker) and that will put you at ease. getting the screening is also just a good excuse for more baby pictures. good luck and enjoy!

Hi, it's really not a big deal. It's non-invasive and doesn't hurt, just really uncomfortable when the doctor pushes on your stomach. It think for twins, it's a little more challenging to get the babies in the right position for the measurements.

We had ours on Monday and it was long and drawn out because the babies weren't cooperating.

I hope yours goes well.

Mine was last week and it was super easy. The doctor did have to push on my tummy once to get baby to move. Mine was very quick due to baby being good ... at the end the doctor said all looks good and no reason to worry! I did do blood work after

Best of luck to ya!

I just had my NT scan this morning! It was so much fun!! First of all, it was the first u/s that I've had done on my belly. Then up on the screen our baby just started dancing around and waving his/her arms and legs. It took a while to get our baby into the right position and she did have me cough a couple of times and use the restroom, but he/she finally cooperated and we got good results. They will be looking at the fluid in the neck and they also like to see a good bridge to the nose since Down's babies tend to have a flatter face. I have a very prominent nose and it appears those genes are still pulling through nice and strong!

I was also nervous and woke up several times last night. It's normal to be a little nervous because we never want to hear there is something wrong with our little miracle, but I'm sure yours will be strong and healthy! Best of luck to you!!
