Constipation and spotting

Hello All,

I am wondering if anybody else had this problem? I am 13w3d today.I had brown discharge starting on 11 weeks , which lasted for couple of days. Doctor assured me it was nothing but old blood.

After couple of days I had severe constipation and very hard stool, I had some red bleeding at that time which turned into brown later. Doctor did the US and baby is fine,
He said they don’t know why it happens. After that everyday I have brown discharge/mucus every time I pass stool, due to constipation I have to use lot of strain and
Pressure. Could this discharge be because of constipation?

Thanks

Absolutely. Drink lots of water and eat lots of fiber to try to deal with the constipation.

Constipation is not causing vaginal bleeding. When you strain, you are using mucles in that area that are pushing out the brown discharge. It would eventually come out on its own, but pressure from pushing forces it out after a bowel movement. However, as long as the bleeding is brown and the dr. says not to worry, then you are ok. I spotted from weeks 6-10 and dr. was not concerned. A lot of people spot during pregnancy and it is not a problem. We are taught to think that any blood during pregnancy is always bad, but that is not the case.

I'm editing to add that you should try something to help with the constipation. My perinatologist approved Milk of Magnesia. I took the cherry flavored throughout pregnancy. It tastes pretty good and really helped me.

brown mucus sounds more like the mucus plug - with the straining, you could be straining too hard and pushing down to much on the plug with is releasing.

can they give you colace if the added fiber is not working?

I had red spotting at about 7 weeks due to constipation. Happened one evening and I was concerned. I have Activa yogurt everyday and that really helps.

Question

I was just about to post a similar question!! I had a little pink spotting last Friday night (after a difficult time going to bathroom) and then spotted brown for the next day or so. I went in Monday for a scan, and the baby was moving like crazy and the heartbeat was fine. I completely forgot to ask about the straining from going to bathroom. Dr said a little "crampiness" and "soreness" along with some spotting are completely normal, but it's still very scary. I also had a little brown spotting all day today...also after some straining last night. I got so worried that I came home from work this morning.

Could the strain from BMs really be causing this spotting? It's never more than just a little spot each time I wipe, and then, not every time I go.

Anyone else experience this?

(p.s. I didn't realize "B-M" was a censored term on here...when I first posted this response it put ** instead...???)
