Looking for creative ways to share the baby's gender
So my sister originally wanted to come along when we go to find out the baby's gender, which will hopefully happen in just a few weeks. I, however, think that it would be weird to have people other than me (obviously), DH, and the medical staff present. Plus, I think this is something special for me and DH, not something for the whole world to be part of. When I told her she couldn't come, she then said that I needed to come up with a creative way to let the family know if it was a boy or a girl. I am not a very creative person in areas like this so I was hoping I could get some suggestions. Thanks!

I'm not very creative either. I sent everyone a text that said "We're buying blue...and more blue. Twin boys!"
And I agree with you on the appointments. I don't want anyone in there with me but their daddy - even though MIL keeps dropping hints, it's not happening.

Hi Jenny, IMHO, I think that it's up to you whether you want to tell anyone at all. I agree it should be between you and DH when you find out. It's like asking to be present as you give birth. I'm not a very creative person but you could always keep it a secret until you give birth! Or maybe have a get together with some sort of unveiling with ultrasound pictures. That would surprise everyone. ![]() Hope you're doing well!

A good friend of mine had a barbeque and the US results was what they were celebrating. They sent out invitations say something like we're having a boy! come celebrate with us. They also had a video of the US and showed it at the barbeque. They chose to let everyone know his name at that time.

When I was planning something creative to announce our pregnancy my idea was to make little cards that on the outside read "Two Decembers" (Dh and I are both December babies) and then on the inside it would say "Made a March Baby." But we didn't end up going that route because we were #1 concerned after our miscarriage and #2 too excited to hold it in once we saw the heart beating. But then I thought I'd do the same idea and say "Made a March Baby BOY!" But DH told his aunt (who works at the hospital) and before we got out the door his mom was calling. Took the creativeness right out of us.

Thanks for the ideas ladies!
I like your card idea, Jen. Doing something like that would be great since we (specifically me) have a lot of family that lives all over so it would be impossible to get them all together. Although, my dad's brothers and sisters are all coming down at the end of July to celebrate my dad's 60th birthday, so if I get the u/s early enough in the week, I could let them all know then. They will be here the weekend of my 20th week.. and my OB won't do the gender scan until 20 weeks. |

Really? My first gender scan was at 17 weeks. DH has a much bigger family then I do and word of mouth definitely spreads and quickly so we didn't have the opportunity. I wanted to include "the shot" on the inside where I planned to put "Make a March Baby BOY!" Doesn't have to be anything huge and fancy or even a big full sheet card. Just something personal and something you can keep forever.

We found out it was a boy the day I went to see my high risk OB and get my cervix measured. I ended up needed to be admitted at that moment to have a cerclage first thing in the morning so when I called people to tell them I was in the hospital I always started with "Me and your grandson/brother/nephew/great grandson" and then finished my sentence. Only my Dad took a little bit to catch on (MY SIL just had a baby boy a few months earlier) but everyone was so excited (except those that already had a feeling and they just said I knew it).
If we are lucky enough to get another chance we will not be finding out until he/she is born. We figured life only has a few real surprises.

I was hoping they would do the scan at my next appointment which will be at 16 weeks but I called today to find out and was told it won't be done until 20 weeks. I guess it's just one more thing put here to teach me patience

I wouldn't worry about waiting until the 20th week -- that way, you'll be 100% certain. At both my 15 and 18 week appointments, the baby's legs were crossed, so I'm going to have to wait until next week's anatomy scan for the info. So frustrating! But if your baby is willing to open his/her legs during your 16 week ultrasound, there's no reason why your OB shouldn't be able to let you know....
I'm glad you posted this -- let's hear some more creative ideas!

I don't think I'm actually getting an ultrasound at my 16 week appointment. I'm pretty sure my doc said that the majority of the rest of my appointments will just be giving a urine sample, getting weighed, and listening to the heartbeat with a doppler. It didn't really register when he said it that there would be very few ultrasounds in the future, but I guess I'll just have to deal with it. I'll try to remember at my next appointment to ask if he'll do the anatomy scan at the 20 week appointment too. I would assume that would be the case.

Well DH and I had a baby revealing BBQ and had gotten shirts with the u/s picture and the words "I'm a..." on top of the picture and then the word "BOY!!" under the picture for all the grandparents and they had to open them at the same time. It was neat to see the expressions on their faces and also nice to know they all found out at the same time and no one felt like they were left out. And it was a great way to celebrate the new miracle and news. And the shirts we did ourselves, we used the iron on sheets you can get at staples and I believe we just used microsoft word, so it was cheap and the grandparents loved it!

You're such a good patient -- and so very patient, too! I always ask for an ultrasound.
![]() I would recommend that you ask about the anatomy scan. My OB sends her patients to a specialist for that (as do most of the OBs where I live; everyone I know has gone to the same perinatologists' office for their scans). If your OB does them himself, then great. If not, then you'll need a separate appointment. Quote:
