Any info on adoption grants?

We had our first consult last night with an adoption agency and low and behold, it will cost $40,000 TOTAL! Obviously we don't have anywhere NEAR that amount.. while we are still looking into other agencies which may be more affordable, I want to check all my options.

I heard from a friend that adoption grants are available? Just starting my research on this.. has anyone recieved one? Any resources you can direct me to?

Thanks!

Are you looking at domestic or international adoption? If domestic, definetly research other agencies. That seems WAY out of line expensive. Another option is adoption through the foster care system which is usually free or next to free.

As far as the grants, you might try posting on our Adoption Forums. (Linked at the top of the page.) I haven't personally researched grants, but having been a mod on those forums for years, my impression is that grants are supposedly out there but no one ever seems to qualify for one. Definetly ask over there though. Lots of wonderful people who have BTDT and are glad to help.

Good luck!

Someone posted this link in another thread and I found it really helpful:

Adoption - Adoptive Families

It outlines the expense of each type of adoption.
I do agree, 40k seems incredibly high.

I know there is an adoption tax credit, I haven't confirmed but I believe it is around 13k.

There is currently a refundable adoption tax credit of around $13,000. Can't remember the exact amount off the top of my head. My understanding is that for domestic adoptions the child must be classified as special needs. All international adoptions qualify. There is also an income cap at which you no longer qualify. (Not that that is an issue for most of us, but throwing it out there. ) Keep in mind though that it could disapper or change as far as who qualifies for it by the time you complete an adoption. It was almost allowed to expire at the end of last year and was not only renewed but expanded (from a credit to fully refundable) at the last minute but it is unknown what could happen with it in the future.
