Do you know if both you and your partner have to be US citizens to adopt and bring a child to the states. My hubby was born in the states, but I wasn't. I am eligible to become a citizen, but haven't bothered to as I haven't had to as yet. Thought I would ask, as we are at the beginning stages of thinking about adoption.

The spouse does not need to be a U.S. citizen; however, the spouse must legally live in the United States. Also, an unmarried U.S. citizen at the age of at least 25 may file an orphan petition.

• That said, you need to discuss your situation with your lawyer, which you'll need shortly anyway, and make sure that those laws also apply to your state. Remember that laws vary from state to state and while this is a federal issue, certain state requirements could be involved as well.
